i really like the effect with the bear and the fire... but rest of the demo is booring and slow

it's not ugly, but too much outdated style...

the screenshot effect was great :D
nice pixelart and a cozy atmosphere but in general kinda boring..
deffenitly deserved to win though (:

cool an moody demo, love how the gfx, music and overall design really works togeither. On the other side, your gourard shader seems dead slow, the particles move jerky, and some of the animation is a bit too linear. I really love the glowing particle-squid-effect. Thumbs up, hope to see the speed issues of the engine fixed in your next demo :)
rulez added on the 2003-06-01 18:16:50 by kusma kusma
It's nice to see extensive use of 2D graphics. The particles were nice. But everything moved so slowly and scenes too simple in content.
oh my god - they kill the framerate!

nice stuff...

a very good one ! perhaps a little too slow... but there are original ideas and the colors are very nice. so yes, and definitively yes !

Nice demo with an unique atmosphere. I like it and also speed wise it's mostly ok on my old machine.

except for the code, which seems to suck ass (next to the fact that it does nothing even halfway impressive), the materials were kinda okay. some nice graphics, some nice music, some good ideas...

but the "coding" just spoils that so badly
sucks added on the 2003-06-02 00:10:47 by superplek superplek
Haha, yeah, the coding is.. well, not perfect.
It's fairly optimized and my first attempt at a 3d engine. It runs fine on my Duron 800 so cut me some slack ;)

A very nice overall ... The speed issue, while being noticeable, don't kill it in the end. And props for GFX work ( cute bears ! :) )
rulez added on the 2003-06-02 10:43:00 by kohai kohai
fairly optimized.. 800 mhz.. for this..

right.
where is the world heading.

Highs: Great art, presentation, music. The theme was great, and it oozed atmosphere.

Lows: Outdated 3D objects, slow pace, sorta chugs at times [even on my 1.6ghz p4].

The highs outweigh the lows, thumbs up! Honestly this is the only demo from Birdie worth watching (unfortunately). Miles ahead of everything else shown.

jep outstanding artwork !

Krayz's artwork and gs's music is simply wonderful.

I know there are speed issues but the demo actually runs fine on my 450MHz at work here as well although a little slow. The jerkyness that is noticeable even on high-end machine is a bit weird and doesn't seem to be caused by slow code.

I'm looking into this however, a final version is planned.
added on the 2003-06-02 13:13:04 by cloaked cloaked
pretty pleasant! and the demo actually doesn't seem to run slowly here (700mhz athlon), no chugging present. although I think a *certain scener* (no names) would have a thing or two to say about the subpixel-correction in this demo!
added on the 2003-06-02 13:45:20 by sagacity sagacity
Haven't watched this but...

Fast on P3/450, Durons and Athlons and slow on P4s? Doesn't that ring a bell?
added on the 2003-06-02 13:54:56 by moT moT
boring ?? /me doesn't want to see only fast epileptic hollywoodish cliptros...

this demo has a fantastic fairy touch with beautiful gfx and night lights which reminds me of Orion productions like Purple or Splif's gfx.

it makes me want to watch former Scarab Corpse productions :)
rulez added on the 2003-06-02 14:25:28 by Zest Zest
Watched it on a lousy P4 with dead-slow PC133 SDRAM (on that sorry excuse of a mobo chipset they call the vanilla 845).

Well, it's no Varifom alright, it's slow paced like Orion's Purple but its pace in fact works. Cute graphics all over the place and hypnotic music give this demo a nice feeling. All this with the software rendering make this seem rather old (1998 or something) but that doesn't hurt. The code ran ok in turms of framerate but it was jerky at times. I'll have to watch it on a P3 to see if it does differently there.

All in all, a respectable demo. Well done.

A bunch of fairly decent pictures scrolling by, plus some neat objects and particles on top.
Not uninteresting, but unsatisfying.

Its way below 30fps on my PIII 1GHz... And it really is booring.

moT: probably that it needs some serious cache-optimizing.

One of the most interesting demos of recent times. It may be a little just a little slow but it makes no negative effect on the enjoyment of watching this great production. Krayz has done a great job with setting the atmosphere with the graphics. Infact, this might just be a perfect demo for watching on shrooms :) The effects are all interesting and certainally not the usual "lets follow the latest trend" stuff.. Mega thumbs up for me..
rulez added on the 2003-06-02 23:45:23 by darkus darkus
nice graphics, been missing handdrawn art in the latest demos .. the musick fits nicely to the whole screenplay. well done guys.

Everything but the code pleased me. Expect to see an updated & optimized engine next time (or for the final :P)

What beauty
Great gfx & music, scrolling isn't smooth (p4 2.53 and gf FX!), but well done :))

cool one.
nice gfx, and music.

http://www.fmod.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=973&highlight=gettime

I'm strictly using FSOUND_Stream_GetTime() for sync. and that might very well explain the jerkyness on faster systems.
added on the 2003-06-03 11:34:44 by cloaked cloaked
some great work to be seen here.
but the stuttering scrolling and the bad-looking lighting of the objects spoils it quite a bit.
added on the 2003-06-03 12:12:42 by cp_ cp_
hhmm, worked just fine on this seriously outdated pc here (p3, 450MHz), so the scrolling is a tad jerky, i didn't get any allergies. the fx are simple (for todays standards). i liked the music, the backgrounds and the atmosphere. also the fx complement them nicely.
i'd like to see more productions like this.
congrats! =)

Yeah, another software rendered demo, but it's very slowpaced and boring. I like that a lot of gfx artwork is beeing used..
added on the 2003-06-03 13:00:19 by Optimus Optimus
Demo with one of the best 2d works ive seen. ok, the effects are somewhat simple, but i like the moving lowpoly thingies. and hey...it was worth hushing it up and waiting for the compo... thanks alien :)
rulez added on the 2003-06-03 13:47:50 by Delax Delax
CloakedAlien: The demo definitly have speed issues on mye P4 1800, and it's only in some parts. The framerate seems tu drop below 20 fps in some parts, in some other parts not. (Believe me, it's not a fmod-problem)
added on the 2003-06-03 13:47:58 by kusma kusma
hmm, wierd. I ran it again, and now it was no serious framerate drops. Only jerky animations here and there.
added on the 2003-06-03 13:53:57 by kusma kusma
kusma: there's definately is an issue with fmod. low precision timer gives the same result as a speed issue. I have to work on some sort of fmod/qpc timer hybrid or something to get it accurate AND in sync with the music.

This in combination with the code in some sequences my explain the sporadic drops in framerates. I hardly get any fps dips on my Duron 800MHz. Logic dictates the code doesn't run slower on your P4 1800 ;)

At this point it seems like the main issues are timer and cache (after all it is software and alot of data is being moved all over the place). Some other optimizations has to be done as well, of course, but I'm working on that.

I'm open to constructive suggestions in the meantime. Like when and where the fps seems to drop, sporadic or constant, system performance, etc..

Thanks for all your comments! Both negative and positive.

Okay, now a guy just asked me how the hell I made this prod run so much faster than any other current demo released.. and he's running it on his 600Mhz laptop...

"At this point it seems like the main issues are timer and cache (after all it is software and alot of data is being moved all over the place)"

as if hardware rendering prevents that :)

anyway, it'd BETTER run fast on a 600mhz laptop.. come on.. it's not really rendering anything :)

Liked it, except for the 3d bear (needs some touching up). Particles + artwork ruled, music was good.
