Let's take the negatives first:

1. The underwater effect doesn't really cut it for me.
2. Neither does the music.

Apart from that: Holy crap! You nailed it. Again.

Unbelievable visuals and effects! Still, the hype kinda ruined it. It had no emition, no affection on any personal level or anything. Also, the music wasn't there. It didin't support the visuals but rather was just doing it's own things in the background. But...rulez!

Did not care for the music though, thought the Jan Hammer guitars were dead an buried by now. However it could not ruin the great experience this demo is. Man what a fat show!

Ok, you have won the demoscene, now what? :)
rulez added on the 2010-08-07 23:43:33 by besh besh
I admit, the music was similar to previous ASD stuff, but saying "It's not my cup of tea, again". Ok, you don't like that style of music. I'll see if I can get hold of kewlers to do some traditional demostyle techno soundtracks over the top of ASD demos for people who don't like progressive rock.

It fit with the storyline beautifully and each movement emphasised the content. Clearly a lot of work went into it. If you're moaning about the style, then tough luck. People have different tastes. Others can appreciate all styles.

I have always loved your demos, thumbed it up and looking forward to another your masterpiece. But I must admit, with your full flavour demos with transition fantasies like Iconoclast, Planet risk you always balanced in edge of art/kitsch. An I think (imho) with this demo you are beyond the border of kistch.

A real mishmash you put on this, water from lifeforce, helicopter form rupture, inappropriate 2D scenes which does´not fit with rest of demo, nonsense with tank which has canon through bride girders, dull winter scene of house in winter, and so on....Music is medicre attempt to catch the feeling from your better demos.

I cannot give this thumb down, but for the first time, I give you not a thumb up.

As a ASD fan. Sorry.
Another stunning demo from ASD.

I liked Lifeforce better, though.
rulez added on the 2010-08-07 23:55:55 by SubV SubV
In 15-20 years from now schools will replace Art History with Digital Art History and ASD will definitely be the one group that our kids we'll be studying the depth, direction and sick ideas that their entire team had created and offered the "new age" scene.

aMUSiC: Is the turtle in the opening related to SI?

Can you guys take the time to explain the story behind it because it's sure is a summarization of your previous demos but couldn't get the entire thing, so who would know better than the creators...

I'm sorry to say that although the effort that has gone into this must have been unimaginable to me this just felt like it's more of the same as before.

There's a lot of great stuff here that other people have mentioned, but the camera work really stood out for me. This camera has so much personality, there are handicam shots in this demo where you can sense the holders footfalls, there are tracking shots and crane shots with just enough vibration to make it look organic.

The music was kind of wayward though. Chugging guitars and piano aren't my cup of tea but maybe it'll grow on me.
rulez added on the 2010-08-08 01:01:53 by Claw Claw
Absolutely wonderful visuals! This is my kind of demo indeed. I don't even want to start describing favourite parts, but that bizzare morphing method had me scrambling to figure it out... how the fuck did you do that?

The music was nice, but I think you over-did it with the guitars and discordant notes this time. I'd prefer something slightly smoother.

I'm waiting to see the CNCD&fairlight demo again once it's uploaded before I can decide which one I liked best, but this is definitely one of my favourites.

So many awesome scenes/effects/shaders. The almost macro camera shot scene with the pipes :D

I totally understand that you made the music in this style, and its good, and generally I agree with that other danish person saying that guitars music doesn't fit demos but you did make it work in Rupture. (which has a far better soundtrack IMHO (to bad you don't make more in the genre of size antimatters)).

enough ramblings...Bottom line:

You aced it again. :)

OK, some problems here (both in low gfx mode and normal mode)...
- The turtle object at the very beginning disappears too early from the screen, while it's still supposed to be visible
- The torpedo scene is completely black until the ants come in
- The demo always crashes shortly after the "text flowing out of the tentacles" scene.
oh and FYI I'm using a ATI FireGL V5700 (i think that would equal a HD 3750)
great work navis et al

I'm very torn. One the other hand, it's a like a heaping behemoth of jaw-dropping visuals and on the other it's the same music I've grown to dislike a lot that was in the predecessor, Lifeforce which greatly distracts me from the otherwise excellent content on the screen. Piggy seems appropriate.

The morphing was amazing. The visuals great. There are artsy scenes that I like. Ants and human figures being crushed, religious figure (is there a deep interpretation again? :)

Although I never got annoyed by the guitar in ASD demos before, this time I started to feel this at specific parts of this demo.

Generally speaking, this is quite cool, but I still like Lifeforce more to it. Maybe because this one has the feeling of things reused from previous ASD demos without much consistency, some kind of harsh repetition of usual ASD style. But what better can one do when you have done the best masterpieces before?

Well after a few listens to the soundtrack : I find the cymbals (esp. charleston) are _way_ too agressive, it kinda ruins it all :( I felt quite the same with Rupture. Maybe cutting a bit in the high frequencies would do the trick.

As Lifeforce 2 it's pretty ok. Very clean rendering was present all the time and geometry morphing was a very nice effect, although it was pretty much a regular 3d flyby with a good engine. Would give this a thumb up except you managed to make your all time worst soundtrack. Music seemed to be completely separated from the visuals (and vice versa) and it sounded absolutely horrible. Matter of taste, i know, but I just can't watch this demo with sounds on and that sucks :(

Amazing effort, but it saddens me that there's so much ´iffy´ looking geometry in front of a slow moving camera. I know that its impossible to ask for gamelike-content, but even with this high level of production im just not sold on it.

Some really amazing scenes and concepts going on here, and i appreciate that strong sense of vision, but I just did not like the music at all.

I'm really torn on this demo but thumbs up for effort, vision and transforming geometry!

visuals improved a lot since lifeforce and all in all the rendering quality is very nice. and i really enjoyed the slightly jittered camerawork.

i dont want to jump the soundtrack is bad wagon completely since after all its asd's style. but i really feel like at the demos most interesting effect (the transformation of the vehicles) the soundtrack is pretty much off the road.

The word "genius" gets thrown around too much these days, but I honestly watched this demo with the same fascination and amazement I had the first time I saw a Salvador Dali painting.

The creativity and imagination behind this is baffling, then being able to realise that vision in such detail and with great technical skill, direction, design and audio...well it's the work of genius and nothing less.

I would love to know more about the creative process behind these demos and how the ideas take form.

Incredible demo and a masterful work of art!

It reuses a lot of elements of previous demos (water, growing lines, the beetle, fishes, etc...) but there's enough new stuff for me to be happy :)

For the people who love/hate this demo, well it's typical ASD style, love it or hate it. For one, seing that there's no consensus makes me love it even more. Nothing more boring than everybody loving something because of a new mode or fancy meme of the day.

Some people hate aMusic styles, some people hate the whole eclectic style, me I see that like some kind of dream/nightmare, where things goes from something to something else without any particular logic you can find except a general flow.

My only negative: Runs like shit on my machine (guess I need a new one - Intel Core 2 Quad + 2x 8800 GT 1GB in SLI), runs super smooth on my GF machine (Core i7 + ATI 5850), except she has to disable anti aliasing else the edges of objects are like 4x4 squeres.

Typically frustrating ASD scrapbook of demo concepts with no rhyme or reason.

If you look at just about any scene in itself, it's not only obviously technically advanced, but also visually inventive, and a proof there IS a certain type of creativity there that's rarely parallelled on the scene. However, again, that creativity is unfortunately hidden under a whole heap of mess, and a complete inability to string it all together coherently.

Still, the morphing tractor or whatever was awesome, so piggy.

Great demo, Navis showing his usual fantastic attention to detail.
The dynamic object-morpher is really cool. I also noticed very nice DOF/motion blur etc. so the technical side was very good. The music that many seem to complain about worked for me, typical ASD style, and it fits.

a creative masterpiece. again! :)
the transformerish morphing effects blew my mind.

i'm very disappointed by the music. it's a nice track for itself, but it doesnt have much to do with the demo! What I mean is, there are so many elements in the visuals which practically scream for sound effects, and the music does nothing to connect with it. When sound and visuals work together, something emerges that is MORE than its parts. now you have 100% visuals, and 100% music, while you could have had a 10 times as intense piece of awesomeness... don't think of a demosoundtrack as "the music that runs along and sets a little mood", think of it as the audible part of what you see, while what you see is the visible part of what you hear. well, thats just my 2 cents, maybe you understand what i'm aiming at here, i'd really love to see that aspect improve in asd demos, since in that area there was absolutely no mentionable improvement so far.
and don't get me wrong, i still think it's a good tune. :)

Best demo on the scene since "Lifeforce". I have been waiting for this follow-up ever since I first saw "Lifeforce". And it was SO FUCKING WORTH THE WAIT. I don't know what to say. I mean, every effect, every object. What fuck was those object morphing things :)? So beautiful, and the music is clearly carrying on the "Lifeforce" tradition. It's almost sad that this demo makes demos like "Agenda..." and "Ceasefire" - demos that I consider to be on my top-5 - look only "awesome". This demo is not "awesome". It's "jaw-dropping". Enough... I'm rambling. I want to see this on a big screen. You'd better include this in a demoshow at Evoke or else ;D.

It's like they took a lot of iconic stuff from demos that came out between "Lifeforce" and this demo and made kind a conclusion of sorts. Very nice actually. It made sense somehow. And the transportation theme carries on... I don't get this fascination for helicopters and stuff, it's just an object show, but, hey... The rest was really pretty ;).

thanx for this nightmareish remix of all your earlier demoes !
i think the music is a remix of earlier soundtracks aswell and so fits perfectly !
i should drop a CDC here, but you have enuff of those already anyway and CDCs originally should point out some not so well-known still very good demoes one likes...
happy having found some words now after being speechless for some hours !

Wasn't keen on the music on first watch, but it's grown on me. Lifeforce got me back into the demoscene after a 6-7 rest. This is more of the same, but it's so full of good ideas and clinically executed. ASD are still leaders of the pack.

I'm a bit puzzled here.. A lot of people saying the demo rules but the music doesn't.. Music really is as someone said 50% of the demo with potential to make the whole a lot more than 100%..

Also funny how a lot of demos these days are like, "nice 3d, _the effect_ was nice too" :D

My personal favorite were the ants in the blueish "amber", a nice detail that might've been easy to miss.

Very much interested where ASD can take things from here, this surely feels like an end of a journey of a kind. So thumbing up for the years long buildup and effort, but please, let this be the end of the growing tentacles!!

Hmm the morphing doesn't actually look like morphing that much, more like just rendering objects on top of each other with some variation on how they're twisted and stretched? Since all objects have pretty much similar geometry, it works?

Navis really is a better artist than a coder nowadays, a real achievement with that transition. great work on the cameras and continuousness in particular. This is deserving of respect, not just for the result but the effort behind it, the concentration required to make a demo over that length of time.

I dont think it has the "wow" factor that lifeforce had. Perhaps its because it's more of the same, continuing where that left off; an evolution of lifeforce, not a revolution. perhaps because it's not as bombastic. Which is a good thing imo because lifeforce got cheesy in places; this has a bit more understatement. Or perhaps its the blog and expectation / hype being too much for any demo to ever stand up to.

Problems ("it's a great demo, BUT.." :) ):
- the SSAO - i dont like it. standard ssao problems - it's too dark and too narrow, and it looks more like an outline at times. still i understand the importance of it with the rendering technique here (relying on zbuffer intersections).
- the music. it's not that the track is bad at all, it's just that i cant remember any of it after the demo finishes. the start is nice and seems like it could turn into something nice. but then it just disappears for 6 minutes into a list of seemingly random solos. organ, guitar, piano, panflute, choir.. finally at around 6:45 it gets back to some melody and feeling and becomes memorable again. id like to see what happens when asd makes a big demo based around a song, starting with the song and trying to feel though the whole piece, not making a soundtrack to fit a demo. dare i say it, this soundtrack felt a bit uninspired. like it needed too much messing about to fit the direction. i dont know.

of course, great demo. thumbdowners, i dont understand you. :)

What Smash said about the music, it felt uninspired and I couldn't remember much about it once the demo was finished. During the demo it also felt like I already heard it in many demos before, which somehow didn't help supporting the visuals as it should have. It was not bad, but it was not great either.

Now the visuals, that was just Great. Excellent flow and transitions, very good idea for the morphing effect etc... Navis, you're insane :D

Right, ive just got around to watching it since getting back and I really like it, the music isnt really to my personal taste, it only really comes into its own at the end of the demo I think and the emotional impact drive home.. all in all though its a well acomplished piece. I really liked the use of animation/skinned stuff this time making everything feel more alive and dynamic, the morphing was cool but I was looking for more umpf from that scene or just some sort of link/transitional reasoning for it, really cool though.

Certainly a great piece of work. Less dazzling than Lifeforce in my opinion, but still with a remarkable flow.

So basically:
+ flow
+ long shots
+ imagination maze
+ geometry morphings
- exaggerated SSAO
- music not as good as other ASD musics
- some animations (especially the diver)

Thank you for the moment!

Very nice texturing, camera work and direction.
The music style is different from the standard techno/trance thump, so +1 for that. The distorted guitar clouds the mix in some places, the cymbals/hihats are too pronounced in some parts (e.g. the beginning). It would also have benefited from a little bit more dynamics, instead of the "all engines are go" feeling.
But.. FUCKING AWESOME PLAYING on the keyboard parts at the end!

No, it just didn't work for me. Like most of ASD demos it's technically good and transitions are smooth.

Too bad the music is same old crap, at least you didn't have vocals this.

Not to mention that this sort of looks like some bad joke production made with huge amount of resources, or what else should you think when you see ants and people coming out of worms ass?

The script, flow, modeling, and effects are nothing short of amazing. But, I just can't, in my heart, thumb this up. It really feels like an ASD-anthology more than something new. Take one part Lifeforce, one part Metamorphosis, one part Rupture, mix and serve. Objects and scenes are too familiar.

Second, the music. Cramming a bunch of different effects and scenes into the demo is fine, but musically, it needs to be more consistent. The organ didn't fit. And you don't have to pack every note in an octave into the song, just pick a few. :)

Finally, the camera. I get motion sickness watching this. I know ever since Debris, everyone wants to add perlin noise to their camera and make it all shaky. But there are scenes here where it just looked like you sent a 5-year old into your scenes with a camera. And for artistic/abstract scenes, what's the point, unless there is a constant earthquake taking place?

As the next chapter in the continuing ASD saga, it's great. But I feel like I've seen so much of this before, I just wasn't blown away.

Stunning. The scenes + concepts were amazing, once more it flows incredibly well, and everything hangs together.

The music was fine for me too - it's not something I'd want to listen to separately, but for the demo it works. I think the thing that gets people is that it's not a traditional demo song.. it's more like a movie soundtrack, with many parts matching what happens on screen. The difference is the length.. in a movie soundtrack you get all these parts spread over 90 minutes, in this demo you have the same kind of variety in 8 minutes. That's hard to pull off, but I think amusic did a good job :)

Flaws for me: the SSAO effect looked a bit bad (smash implies it was kind of necessary, why? :) and the steamroller scene - it seems the scenery is rolling past on a treadmill which fits well, but the scenery just vanishes instead of folding away or something.

Going to watch it more times (hopefully in realtime today if I can get to a computer capable of running it!) but I think it'll mature into another classic.

Hi all,

First of all may I say that I had a smash-ing time at Assembly this year. I'm really glad I was there to meet and speak to so many of you. I think I grew up a lot over the 4 days, learned so much (I remember our conversation at klubi, even though I was way too drunk) and got myself into deep thoughts.

It is common for me to feel quite depressed after a big party and this is the state I'm in at the moment; so take the following with a pinch of salt.

Thanks for all the comments, both positive and negative. I've been on pouet since the beginning and I've learned to take it on the chin. I think what matters is that this demo, good or bad, is going to be talked about in circles outside the demoscene. This is the result of winning the Assembly demo compo, by chance or by skill or by both. This year we ran into a very strong competition from Fairlight, whose demo I appreciate and envy in a good way. I do believe that both demos (ours and theirs) are important in carrying a message across the scene and to the outside world; and as such will become classics and respected in the long run.

Back to the demo: you probably know by now that the visuals were made before any music was written. In this demo, there are 14 mood changes and over 30 moments that have a special effects. It was thought of as a more "theatrical" piece, something like a musical or an opera.

What are the options for a musical piece for something like that? not much apart from classical music, maybe jazz, maybe progressive rock/metal. Leviathan (who is the principle
composer) and aMusic wrote a progressive metal piece which, in my opinion, fits very well with the visuals.
Should they get a scene.org award for best soundtrack? I don't know, I don't care. Should they getting a big fucking *Nobel* in creating music under the most horrible conditions ever imaginable to an *artist*? sure they should.

Think about it. No just think about it for a moment. 14 mood changes.

If you liked the soundtrack, all kudos to Leviathan and aMusic. If you didn't, it is all my fault. I take responsibility for it because it was my chaotic visuals who dictated what happens down to the last note.

But there is more to that. The demo is more than the collection of its parts. But it will take some time to work its appeal on you. I wrote an article for "happiness" that will be published quite soon on your favourite demo-magazine, so stay tuned.

Anyway, this is it. Thanks for all, we'll be back.

They are there by mistake.

There are a few other things in there, like an empty "New Folder" and a shortcut to a file, hehe ;) .

This was very very VERY good. You take a few relatively simple lighting systems, layer them together, keep them consistent throughout a production, use them to show great content, shake/blur the screen when necessary, spend way too much time syncing etc...... ah fuck who am I kidding, well done ASD. Blew me away; watched it over and over already. Thank you :) .

Oh and BTW....good job not reusing everything. You tend to use a few models over and over (and there was SOME of that here), but this was mostly original and I'm quite OK with that.

Meh. I heart the morphing bits, and the lovely lovely textures, but so much of this felt a bit samey. Would have been a thumb up, but for the music. It was clear (even before Navis commented) that it was a bit of an afterthought, like 'right, thats the demo done - now lets get some music.' Compare that to the CNCD/Fairlight release which feels like the music came first, regardless of how it actually happened - the music *has to fit* or else its pointless.
added on the 2010-08-10 21:22:00 by Mtl Mtl
to comment on Navis' note about the music: To me it didn't feel wrong neither in terms of style, composition or (not) matching the visuals, I think it does. I just think the production value is weak. To me it obviously sounds like a homerecording, not like a decently produced progressive metal piece what it actually wants to be.
very well executed demo with a lot of pants-dropping moments, but a little confusing story and an ugly SSAO implementation... don't know what to think about the soundtrack... maybe without the guitar solos it would have worked better, don't know.
but here's my thumb for the enormous effort and pretty impressive transitions/visual fx.

Navis,

there are no bad conditions to make music for. Be it 1,2 or 14 mood changes. It's a pleasant challenge to work for. Getting the direction right wasn't probably any easier so there's no excuse for anyone else to fail at succeeding where you did. Every part of the demo is as good as it could be, except the audio.

The music feels cheap and unfinished. It doesn't live up to the standards of the demo. That's something i don't understand.

How many persons on the planet is talented enough to come up with the ideas, script, painting, modeling and coding this thing by him/her-self? I'd say less than a handful. Awesome awesome work by Navis.

Then people try to find something that's not optimal, and only talk about that instead of the awesomeness of the rest. A shame.

First off: BRILLIANT. Certainly the most anticipated ASD production yet (if not most anticipated demo ever full stop...?) and didn't disappoint.

So. At this point criticising the music is probably just twisting the knife further, but I can see what everyone means. The music should be making me feel the panic of the figures who are having their world churned up by the bulldozer from hell, and the terror of being pursued by the snake tentacle beasts. But instead, I'm thinking 'woah, awesome effect!' while an organ solo pootles along.

After Amusic and Leviathan got the mood so spectacularly right in previous prods (especially Lifeforce... it was the music that made rainbow ribbons feel exciting and a bell tower seem melancholy) it's hard to see how it missed the mark here - perhaps the visuals were so tightly directed that there was no room for interpretation, or maybe they were deliberately avoiding the obvious stylistic choices (like, say, discordant strings for the snakes) for fear of falling into clichés. I hope (and expect) that Navis is right about it being a slow burner, but it feels like a missed opportunity to not have me on the edge of my seat on these initial viewings.

Either way, anyone who doesn't thumb this up has a seriously screwed up value system. So there.

Good one. The music was somewhat inconsistent and prog rock didn't fit in well. SSAO produced a lot of artifacts (especially at the beginning)
Otherwise, nothing to complain about - GREAT WORK!

PS Navis, it would be very interesting to find out more about the deformation you applied to all these meshes during the metamorphosis/morphing sequences. I know you quite your blog, but I think we all would appreciate more details about the production of this masterpiece.
rulez added on the 2010-08-12 15:12:15 by kraviz kraviz
The morphing sequence is a very simple effect: first I apply some vertex deformation based on a perlin-noise texture and time. At time=0 the object is not deformed, at time slowly moving into =1, the object deforms so that it also shrinks (helicopter/eagle) or pushes itself into the floor (train/truck). The deformation function was found through trial & error, as usual. Another thing worth mentioning is that the deformation also applies some rotation with a different pivot for every sub-object (that's why the wheels of the tank jump up).

Now.. the metamorphosis effect is two objects that cross-"fade". I render both at the same time. With AO and shadows it looks ok.

I think it is a total of a few lines of vertex shader code.

After all the shit that's been flung at the soundtrack I feel someone has to defend it, and since I really enjoyed it, I'll give it a shot.

I thought the moods and movements were handled very well. I really liked the organ riffs in the middle. It's true that sometimes the production could've been better, but, while I think good production is damn hard to achieve and I sincerely look up to anyone who's good at it, I don't think a few misses here and there should be a complete dealbreaker if the composition's solid. And that it is, in this case.

@Navis. I think you've made an really awesome demo, and it really kicks ass. Couldn't it be interesting, at least, to see what demos you _could_ make, if you had a tune from let's say a Kewlers composer. I'm sure than some of those people would be more than willing to make something for you.

I think there is a reason why demos are written by groups rather than a collection of random individuals.

It is also what we get out of it as a group: the fun of making something from scratch. I'd rather share that with my friends. Having said that, I still have a couple of cross-group projects open (hello Gloom!).

+1 for the graphics (a little dark with ppl being flattened by a steamroller, but hey, no living persons and all that, amirite?)
+1 for the major chord finish (I am SO glad you guys decided not to go down the Radiohead route)

Alright...a few things about the so blamed music...I'd like to start saying that if I wanted to create an epic cheesiness of a soundtrack I would and it would be actually quite easier than making a prog metal piece (which is the genre I love and play generally). Point is ASD as a group 1st pulls off what "WE" like and then think about "Would it appeal to everyone?". You can't please everyone and demoscene isn't hollywood. I never expected everybody to like our music but it is a window for us to express what we really want to write and it's a damn challenge to accompany Navis scenes in a demo.

As for the guitar production...well yes I'm not pleased either but the truth of the matter is I booked a studio to record them proffessionally and they cancelled on me due to some other big band, thus I had to do it the old way, recording in my room with a 10 year old microphone because there was no time, so I'm sorry for that, perhaps I'll make a reproduction when I find time again. And yes Romeo Knight, I'm playing the guitars not aMUSiC lol. I also write all bass and drums, aMUSiC is responsible for all the violin, piano, organ, electronic and beat sections in general.

leviathan: music is something boiling down to personal taste everytime.. still the mass of criticism regarding the tune shows that something obviously "didnt work" here, at least not on the same level as the visuals.
while im far from telling you how to make your music i think you should try make a cool tune first and then navis creating visuals around that (if hes cool with it, of course). i dont know if you have done this witn one of your prev. prods but that would be a nice and rel. simple way to increase the listener-experience.

I just cheer for the musicians that dare to do something else then techno, trance and dnb (which there is tons of because it`s easy to do in high quality). And do people expect to get studio quality from non-commercial progressive rock?
added on the 2010-08-13 20:32:29 by Zplex Zplex
@Zplex: I guess you're referring to my comment:
  • I at least expect a good song to not to be ruined by a bad sound. It's quite easy nowadays, it can be done, it's not a matter of equipment anymore like 2 decades ago.
  • I expect heavy guitars to have low end and midrange, those almost sound like gated noise, it's extremely unpleasant on the ear.[*] I expect a proper mix without a much too loud and annoying artificial snare sound. [*] I expect upfront lead guitars not to be drowned in reverb - sounds like this has been done to cover playing flaws, I don't know. List goes on.
  • Well, aMusic and Leviathan, don't. I appreciate your effort, I like this style of music, but IMO it's just not well executed.
haha the sentence should be "Well, aMusic and Leviathan, don't get me wrong.
Regarding the music: "Haters gonna hate."

That said: It's not the music itself, it is the mix/mastering. I agree with Romeo Knight there. It just all sounds too thin/dry and the instruments don't come together. The music is actually fine, you could leave it as it is, it is just the mixing of the instruments that hurts it unfortunatly.

I guess, some appear a little bit too much upset about this because they care about ASD demos a lot and want them to be as perfect as they can be.
added on the 2010-08-14 00:52:42 by Salinga Salinga
Yes the mixing is a bit off imo too. Very flat, not enough dynamics on drums especially, instruments kinda blend to eachother at times, guitar especially sounds very sluggish, and the hihats are too loud, almost hurts my ears.
Another big problem is that there is most of the time almost no connection between the visuals and music. I'm not in the mood to get too much into that right now though...
added on the 2010-08-14 01:12:42 by noby noby

Among the top ... of bad music, in Lifeforce, it could be tolerated, but this is just plain bad and pain for your ears, but as Romeo Knight said, it's not the kind of music, it's just so poorly executed.

The demo itself contains some really great stuff, the morphing in particular, and the amount of work is really impressing, but at the end I had a kinda "meh" feeling. The direction is great, but the lack of a good soundtrack giving the demo the respect that it truly deserves and the masterpiece it could have been, it just isn't.

Really, do try out some other musical style, may i suggest some other musicians for a change, i really do enjoy the visuals of most of your demos, but your music destroyes them. I don't mind metal music, as long as it's good, it just isn't.

Fairlight(/CNCD) recently made a style change, I really do hope you would try the same. Piggy

good, better, ASD. You guys know how to make something special. Artistically uber-well done trip through surrealism with all seeming so coherent. Exceptionally well crafted music, it really shows off amusics composing talents, but sadly it is not a bit catchy. During the demo i often felt like visuals and audio were doing their own things, just coming together from time to time for a second and then drifting off in their own improvisations. I am writing this right after watching the demo and i can't remember any 10 seconds from the music and that's what i find very sad. I guess this time amusic has overdone it. By the way, for those complaining about the tank's cannon being between the bridge's girders. Well apart from the obvious answer that it's a demo showing things that don't necessarily belong to the realm of reality.. (like flying fish, trains - trees and a floating escher staircase construct inside a dollhouse, 4 clones of navis' silhouette on the Last Supper and a sun that goes "pling" ;), the tank when being submerged is moving forward on that also-reality-defying treadmill in the toystore display. Given that, it can very well turn its cannon to pass through the girders while being on the move.

I just cheer for the musicians that dare to do something else then techno, trance and dnb (which there is tons of because it`s easy to do in high quality).

You Sir, are an idiot! There's never been anything easy about doing anything in "high quality". Not techno, not rock, not metal, not hiphop, not classical, not country, not.. you see where I'm going with this?

I understand Life Force pretty well. It's one of my favorite demos, ever. This demo seems to try to continue the story, or at least somehow pick up where it left off, but I just can't get into it. It seems like it's TRYING to tell a story, but the message is so abstract that I can't follow it. In other words, it is not very accessible. I will try watching it again to see if I pick up on anything new, but it seems to me, that should not be required to understand.

pros: the usual mind exploding ASD stuff.

cons: runs like smash coded it, maybe worse. seriously, 20fps at 1280x800 with a core2quad and GTX 280?
rulez added on the 2010-11-16 04:29:52 by praetor_alpha praetor_alpha
praetor_alpha: here it runs at constant 40fps+ at HD on a lowly ATI 4850... so...
added on the 2010-11-16 12:31:19 by Navis Navis
Navis: You're clearly doing something fishy (per NVIDIA's standards), as the demo crawls even on my GTX 480.

I've noticed that it really depends on the time since you booted your pc. If you run the demo after a clean boot, it runs smooth for the first couple of runs. After that it goes like a slideshow. Same thing happens if you wait 30 minutes after the boot before you run it, and that's on a 285. Been trying to pinpoint why is this happening (happens with other OGL demos as well on occasion). Anyone has any idea?
added on the 2010-11-16 13:22:21 by aMUSiC aMUSiC
rebooting didn't help framerates here (usual 20-30fps at default settings). got the latest 260 drivers, same thing happened with the 197 ones. Weren't all the other ASD demos coded for a Geforce FX?

On most current drivers one can get.

A truly brilliant production. The soundtrack really carries the entire thing (I know, shoot me, but I really think it does) The progression almost makes me think of those amazing one-shot movies, where you have to admire the shere amount of stuff that can go wrong during such a long shot. That's not the case with this, ofcourse, but I really admire the clever ways you manage to connect each scene to the next. Really great and imaginative work!
