nah... i'm an opengl beginner, and even i could write something like this. only the flame is something you could call an effect.

@jazzman: sometimes in a prod there is not that if you can code something, but how you use it in the prod. I mean that you may be able to code the best effects, but not to be able to use them correctly in order to make a good demo because you lack design ideas. At my opinion that what makes the good demo is the good design, so you can make a winner demo with classic effects but with good design. That has been prooved in the past many times (f.e. The Spot be Exceed - nothing new but however the good design gave it the first pos).
