fuck LinkedIn, why people don't salt hashes? now I've to change so many passwords... >_< -
I wonder what's more questionable... they not using salts or you using the same password everywhere. -
salts are only as good as your security of the salt itself. -
I don't use the same password everywhere: I've one password for social networks, another one for forums, another for email, bank account, my servers, etc... ie depending of the importance/risk of mine user - 2012-06-07

gargaj: Hmm? A salt doesn't have to be secret to be effective, if that's what you're suggesting. -
"A salt" or "salting"? -
"A salt". Even if you know what my salt is, md5(my_password + "scfghucmiseruhgsmiret") = 51fe900b5a3802879cd1b0f847681889 is a lot harder to crack than md5(my_password) = 72b302bf297a228a75730123efef7c41 -
for one password, perhaps. as soon as the salt is figured out, though, we go back to dictionary attaks. -
But it's a dictionary attack per individual password (assuming one salt per password), rather than a rainbow table for the entire set. -
the salt can easily be unique per user ( using e.g. the timestamp the account was created + some thingumajic ) -

salt is only unsafe if it's in the bath!
