the implicit function itself is *a* distance function. it's not necessarily the minimum euclidean distance, and neither is iqs suggestion. - but parapete wants to know the euclidean distance, so he can step on the ray as much as possible
- ...thinking about this, all you need is a lower bound anyway. If you have any smooth, implicit function with a bounded derivative (in a certain region of interest), you can get reasonably good lower bounds on the minimum distance to the next intersection
