The general idea works. It just has to be adapted to each pattern separately.

Yes, if you're implementing the display driver. I meant on the application side, where I don't think subpixels in e.g. a diamond-shaped layout are individually addressable.

Colour displays have been RGB since they first came out in the 1970s: I saw a TV once that had YELLOW as a fourth subpixel colour! What happened to that, I wonder?

Don't know if it was a success marketing wise, but it definitely was no success from a technical standpoint, measurements have shown it doesn't add any colors because the backlight lacked the extra primary
