- demotool Linux Windows ImageColorPicker by Team210 [web]
- Would a tool like this be possible in less than 90MB? Easy. Plain C(++), some basic GL or D3D, Dear Imgui or plain Win32, stb_image or just use Windows for image loading, and there you go in a couple of hundred kilobytes.
But would that completely kill any productivity if the goal is to just get the job done with the least amount of hassle? Yes it would, with a vengeance.
So does it get the job done? Well, if the job is snatching colors from other people and prototyping them in a way that yields nice looking results, with Oklab, direct copy&paste into your code and everything, I'd say it's a profound yes. Seriously, you'll survive the max 30 seconds it takes to download nowadays, let alone the 0.01% of your hard disk space.
That's really a small price to pay for making your prod look better, and that's all that counts in the end, doesn't it? :) - rulezadded on the 2023-10-21 00:30:30
- demo Windows mechasm by Fairlight [web]
- What everybody else said. This is sheer excellene. Except:
One one hand I would have liked this demo to have more of an emotional impact on me. No idea if it's my role as Revision organizer that kinda forces me to keep a distance to the prods released at the party or the demo itself, but it left me colder than it should have.
On the other hand though, and I can't stress this enough: As it stands, Smash is the only person in the PC scene right now who really tries to push the envelope when it comes to graphics programming. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of brilliant people around, but when it comes to the sole purpose of making a GPU go brrr in new ways, there is, as of right now, absolutely no comparison. This is absolutely something we all should aspire to and get our heads of our collective rears, and I sincerely hope this will happen soon. - rulezadded on the 2023-08-19 00:42:36

But this is Future Crew-level talent extrapolated 30 years ahead.
I'd rather say Spaceballs instead of FC. In a number of ways, this is 2023's State of the Art. Starting from the obvious "digitized actual people" to the fact that for me the demo got progressively less "epic" (as in let's say Lifeforce) on my multiple rewatches but more and more revealed itself as being of the "one thing done right" variety. Which is absolutely a good thing.
Funnily enough there's also the same kind of controversy that SOTA had, as in people going "this is not the way", be it the use of prebaked data or file size or whatever, and in both cases the correct response is to Fuck The Haters. :). If we apply the same criterion to the file size as we did in the olden says, aka it should fit on one or two pieces of removable media, we're still nowhere near.
Other than that, most people already pointed out what's great about this, and I can agree to all of them.
(and as a sidenote, can I point out how funny it is that Smash and Navis both went "it's messy, I don't know if I really like it, but if that's the state/future of the scene, I'm in" at each other this year? That's like 2010's but we're all adults now :D ) - rulezadded on the 2023-08-19 00:36:14

actually it is this way because of revision demo compo organizer does not accept a zip file with static html/js. oh the irony
Just to make it clear - We indeed are accepting pure html/js zip files, as long as they can run from the local file system. Details here: https://2023.revision-party.net/competitions/pc/ - isokadded on the 2023-03-28 15:39:00

What else can I say - Really nice soundtrack and actual effects. Here's a thumb. - rulezadded on the 2022-12-02 16:07:47

- Seems like the experience you collected making Piledriver had a good side after all :) The animation, camera work, pacing, meta commentary, and the interplay between visuals and music is so on point it could take the ballet world by storm. This is one of those demos that just make you smile all the way through, and it's playing on the scene's self referentiality just right.
One small technical nitpick though: It took three attempts until it ran properly here (details on request). - rulezadded on the 2022-09-11 15:14:12
- demo Windows JavaScript Raw by Netro
- That moment when the realization kicked in what exactly it was that we were watching.
Love the soundtrack in all its Nils Frahm inspired (down to that analog noise floor) splendor and how it accompanies the story you're telling perfectly. And it's not easy to make abstract-ish visuals express such a deeply personal and intimate experience (or rather tragedy), but you absolutely nailed it.
The compo winner we deserve for sure. :) - rulezadded on the 2022-09-11 14:39:39
