ZoomRot &| FullScreen-Pixelizer

category: code [glöplog]

Ok, pouet (ofcourse) managed to track down the first appearances of effects ever a lot already, but what about this?

Legend asked on the oneliner:
Quote:

in what intro was this effect first used (the rotate-zoom brian text) Brian The Lion - Commodore Amiga A500 / A600 / A1200 / CD32 (Gameplay Video) and who coded this :) I remember it was someone from demoscene?

i didn´t read correctly first and thought he´s about the "FullScreen-Pixelizer", when a Picture gets more blocky until only one color fills the screen, which i saw the first time ever in a game in just this game!
...but he mentioned "the rotate-zoom brian text", which leads to other effects in this game:

ZoomRot is ofcourse invented by Chaos/Sanity (now Farbrausch) and first shown in
World of Commodore by Sanity, but i guess everyone knows that, especially Legend, being an old Amiguan!

I think the first rotated picture was 2 years earlier already by Rebels, can´t remember the name of the Demo though! :/

I hope Legend will put more Details soon on what he´s after!

I myself am also interested in first Fullscreen-Pixelizer ever, as i remember having seen something alike what´s to be seen in Brian the Lion like more than a year before this game appeared on our BBS-Asses in just 40k! next to a lot of other kewl effects, must have been some scandinavian group for sure! ;)
This brings up memory of SNES games. Zooming map like castlevania. Mode 7 pixelizer. Cylinder map like in castlevania and rotating floor also. Is this game run fast in A500 or is the video from 1200/CD32?

I also like the polygons bouncing for start level text. It's like Sonic but with a twist.

There´s one in
Sanity - Turmoil
i provide a link a second or two before it starts here:
Sanity - Turmoil YOUTUBE

But i think it was before that already, i even think it was by Sanity emselves, Mr.Pet, need to watch more of the old stuff i guess! ;)
The oldest rotozoom I know of was made by The GigaByte Crew as part of the Syntax Terror by Delta Force 2 years before World of Commodore,

Yup, heard that before, seems we all need to format our brainDisks, or atleast re-validate em! Every Amigian knows one thing: the rotZoom was invented by Chaos! ;) He was in the charts for like 5 years, placed number 1! Even after he didnt release that lot anymore!
But unclear to me still is: how many people saw this first Zoom&Rotate ever? was it a popular demo, or did it just get refound decades after?
Doesnt matter i guess, the first is the first stays the first! I doubt chaos knew of it tho! ;)
Would be awesome if someone could provide some video to this prod btw. I was in possession of an Atari ST like 10 years ago, but lost it again before i had internet and the chance to get some useful software (demos!) for it. only used it to play MORIA (roguelike) and PacMan! ;) Got it originally to get into coding again, but without even a cartridge to hack RAM by hand...not to speak of not being able to get my hands on some assembler! Life without Internet is like No Life at all! ;)
I was thinking it was some Balance 40K intro, but I could not find it in those (I admit it was a fast look into this)

Also I remember when this "effect" was first seen, many people were trying to break how it was made back then :)

Was the Syntax Terror by Delta Force popular ? I would say Hell yes! Delta Force was one of the *big* groups of the Atari scene of the late 80's early 90's.

I'm quite sure he knew about it as he had Ataris next to his Amigas back then and also coded some Atari demo parts.

"As I write below, under chunky rotation, effects such as rotations are normally done in a "chunky" way. This program, however, performs an increasing skew of the image (think of it as a square slowly becoming a parallelogram), both horizontally and simultaneously vertically. The horizontal skew is accomplished by stepping the shift registers and bitplane pointers, while the vertical skew is done by an intricate blitter minterm and a table of masks that, for every degree of vertical shift, for every 16 bit word along the image's span from left to right, describe what pixels, in that word, are to be plotted one line below all the other ones. The table of masks were precalculated beforehand with a Pascal program that calculates the horizontal positions where the image will be "broken up" during the increasing shift, and aligns the data to 16-pixel segments, for blits. According to Pythagoras' Theorem, "the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides". Thus, the image has to be shrinked a bit in addition to the skewing, to preserve its shape. (This is done the usual way by making a copper list that skips certain scan lines).

This technique is very rare - the only place where I have seen the same effect is in the intro to the AGA version of the Amiga game "Brian The Lion". Chances are, my version is one of two in the world. :-)"

p01 is right, but this thread is a good remainder! At the time i did not appreciate The GigaByte Crew rotozoomer as it deserved. IIRC it was a 24h screen (hummm...).

I guess a lot of people missed that Gigabyte Crew screen or at least the impact it could have. The first "real rotozoom experience" for me was the intro of http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=13448, I think the same must go for others as well because it's rather impossible to miss the effect on this prod :)
