Demoscene.TV needs you

Not sure about french tax/social security expenses (if DTV is tax-based in france), but paying 3300 euro/gross for a 1700 euro/net salary seems a bit over the top. In Spain (and we pay social security and tax retention aswell), a 1700 net salary sums up 25k (25.757€) gross/year.

The gross salary is not what your employer pays you. In addition to the taxes you pay there are A LOT of hidden taxes paid by the employer that don't appear anywhere on your pay slip. To sum it up:
net salary < gross salary << amount of money needed to legally employ someone
By the way, in France "net salary" doesn't take into account income taxes, so you have to substract them from the 1700 €/month.
In Spain, you call "gross salary" to what your employer has to pay every month for/to you (that is: your net salary + tax retention + social security, etc.)

Ok, it's just a semantic problem then :)
Anyway, the ratio between the two salaries is perfectly normal considering French taxes.
Rouquemoute: since I appreciate this rather sensible thread-detour: one element of your post above ("amount of money needed to legally employ someone") is not something that is relevant to what you as an employee is paid. It has nothing to do with your payslip, and it is not a hidden tax concerning what you are paid -- but it _is_ indeed relevant to the _cost_ of having someone employed. So is employee insurance and a few other costs. However, they are not really relevant when discussing gross VS net salary. :)

I once heard that in the UK, a worker must earn ~2.5x their salary to make the company any money, because of all the taxes + expenses. That's 'gross' pay too, so 3-4x your net salary perhaps.

Anyway, a good enough answer from dax I think. Having a paid employee has done a lot of good over the last few years, but unless some sponsor is prepared to take over asking the non-profit, sometimes-borderline-communist sceners to pay all this is not workable.

I think this has worked out mostly OK though - dtv is up and running, the site is good. We could have done it with a few volunteers in our spare time, yes.. maybe in 15 years, with many problems along the way ;) Now the site should be maintainable with spare time, donations and some help with hosting + bandwidth.

The iphone app will be fully free too - perfect! No issues with selling demos, excellent outreach potential. Remember to put a donation button in there :)

I don't got any cash, but if DTV needs a low budget web-slave I'm available :)

numtek: that's the attitude!

People complain and argue for no apparent reasons. Others offer real help and actually wanna get stuff done. I salute that.

So...

D.TV is abandoned now? No updates happening there.

i was looking for DTV related topic, to see if anyone has started the conversation on one particular issue i have with DTV, however, since there is no, and this is a most active and current DTV topic i will be using it to ask/say few thing from my perspective...

so, in past years, mainly in 2008 and partly 2009, i realised that playing demoscene.tv through PS3 internet browser makes a perfect television, once that remember me of good old mtv days when it was not crap...

however, just when i got used to it, and invested in LCD, it suddenly stopped working, and it stays there for almost a year now, keeping me wondering WTF is going on?

so, can someone explain and/or fix this problem? it's quite annoying, especially since all kinds of jwplayer's work perfectly on all other sites, and i really hate using youtube for my primary demoscene channel.

thank you.

i can also connect this subject with the money topic, but will not, as it can or not have anything to do with it... and i am not interested in another 'we can't make good thing unless we are getting paid' conversation, i've already had more than enough of it in past few years, it's time to stand up and fight for what you believe in, not to beg for money to do it, but to find people and resource, mutate and adapt, just like it was always been.

and personally, i think iphone app for dtv is not a good idea, just like anything to do with apple nowadays, especially when it comes to our demoscene culture.

now go flame on, but please do check my initial question / bug report first.
thank you.

I would also like to know when demoscene.tv will start adding new demos to there video database. I know of the problems in funding but any news on that front ?

dudes:

stop arguing about money, and begin realizing that money is just stupid.

@vibrator: I don't understand your comment. Services aren't free, so how do you expect things to stay online?

(this is not an argument for or against demoscene.tv)

Money is so stupid. He's always running away from home and it never finds it's way back home. Stupid money :(

trixter, he's a commie/anarchist/something similar. probably difficult for you to imagine, but we have bucketloads of em on this side of the pond. it's quite a nuisance, really.

Money is not stupid. It's a tool - at least it's supposed to be.
If one can't handle the tool he can't fix things.

Money is stupid! Unless we start to spend it into useful things!

money is stupid. they try to make people think it is a tool - while in reality it is just a tool for oppression. it's a fraud.

money's a fraud.

think about it: who can print money? can you? no. but the government can. that's why they control you if you believe in their money.

what, you equate communist with anarchist? you seriously have no clue. :)

oh man, demoscene funding vs. fundamental politics :)
vibrator: eh, most people refer to slashes as "or", not "equals". i don't pretend to be able to make out your entire personality from reading a series of bbs posts, but i am able to deduct, however, that your view on life is very far off what most people on this side of the world call "normal". the rest was just a blatant generalization, since nearly all people i've ever met with such a spectacular view of the world were either anarchists or communists, or, well, typically something close enough to one of those.

besides, isn't anarchism the ultimate goal of communist theory
