Some ideas for would-be-cool/useful features :)

category: general [glöplog]
(sorry analogue, this is going to be a tad longer :)

1. possibility to add producers to the respective productions, so i can search for "all demos statix was involved in" or "all intros with music by a-move" or alike. would rock imho :)

2. maybe merge or at least link the ojuice with the pouet databases? this would solve the "where to get a good sceners list" problem for 1. and you'd have some other nifty options too (for example, use the ojuice parties list to automatically fill in production month/year. if you linked the whole database, you could go even further and have releases AND related news items on the same page... not sure if *that* would be useful though, but cool anyway. anyone has a opinion on that?)

3. make the damn textinput windows bigger, atleast for the bbs :) this sucks :)

4. it would be nice if there was a "ownership" concept in the database, i.e. the one who first adds a production gets "ownership" of it, so he can modify the entry if something important changes (e.g. a final version was released, the url changed, or he simply made a type, things like that). that would be *really* useful imho.

okay, i think that's enough for once, now it's time to discuss it :)

hey ryg, great ideas, here's my feedback on them.

1. this would kick ass yes, then you could 'really' call pouet a database :)

2. hm, sounds messy, but why not? could atleast cut out the useful parts.

3. hehe, it should be as wide as the output table imho :)

4. 'this' sounds veryvery good, analogue plz implement this asap :)

yeah, this is some really great ideas
it could also be useful to se if a scener is logged in (like at ojuice) and maybe leave him a message or something like that

If you want ojuice features, why not just ask ojuice to add a demo reviews section. :)

Because Yes has enough work with ojuice and nectarine as-is, and it's cool to have decentralized services instead of one big one?

The problem with crosslinking would IMO be dealing with downtime, i wouldn't want the occasional ojuice hangup to crash pouet.net too *g*

kb: i just don't think every site should have all the same features, otherwise we should all work together on one mega-site. (and people will probably quit/argue before too long :)

comments on ryg's suggestions:
1 & 2: i grouped these because i think that if prods had a people-who-worked-on-it-section, it could make use of ojuice links (e.g. click on the dude for info). news items related to prods would have to be added manually, but it might work.

4: i agree with this one. of course, it might be nice for other people to be able to correct mistakes too, but that might get abused (i know how the scene is..).

kb, if ojuice merged with pouet one of the two servers would be free, so they could mirror each other (even with automatic redirection etc) and the uptime problems would be virtually gone away :)

1. this feature was there on pouet.net one year ago, but as nobody took time to fill the "author" combos (it was like the groups one) I removed it. This kind of featue is usefull when it's filled.

2. the problem is that ojuice and pouet.net are so different. and I don't want pouet.net to be dependent of another server, if pouet.net is down, it's my fault. actually it has been down 1/2 day for the last year ^^ and I can't use the pouet.net userlist as a scener database as there would be the problem of those old demos where the sceners are no more in the scene. Maybe when a really good prod-editor will be there, the feature will be planned

3. Ok, I'll expand it by 50% ^^

4. The ownership is there, and will certainly be used for the future prod-editor (but selected moderators will be able to edit the prods too)

to A_Lee_N: well, messaging in pouet.net would be redundant, I mean, you can click a user and send him a mail or an instant message via ICQ, I don't want pouet.net to get too much features, only what is really needed.

ryg: ojuice use closed source software (windows, asp, sql server) pouet.net use a debian+php4+mysql, I'm not judging anything, just telling that these are two different worlds =)

ps: feel free to comment my post, I'm open-minded ^^;

About the "ownership" thing.... maybe it sould be ok to let everyone not modify existing prods, but add missing information to a prod, eg. the party/rank or the year (just like with screen shots or .nfos).

Then, submitting only a year and no month should work, too :)

And the .nfo upload feature could need a converter from DOS/CP437 to the normal ISO charset, old DOS info files look really ugly now :)

Hi!

What do you think of this feature: "updatind a prod". I mean:
- "Hey! he put a wrong screenshot! I'll upload the right one"
- "I can do animated gif files, to upload in place of the old static one, cos'I I especially like this demo"
- "He put a wrong group! let's correct it..."

Anyway: good job! this site is ...unique ("I searched the dictionary to find a word to describe you. I found one, and it's... unique")

CU.
overflow: read the thread, that is what i said in "4." :)

just a small, small suggestion here.
you know what i would like? a number telling me the size of the file, next to the download link of each prod =)
added on the 2001-05-26 01:38:13 by _ _
ya, size would be nice :)

..and maybe an 'alternate' download link (just in case scene.org goes down? or for different versions of one prod, or maybe for mpeg-versions of amiga demos..?)
and something should be done to support older prods, which are spread over 2 and more disks..
and size, yes, that's cool 8))

and while we're at it, an autoreject for download URLs that have a "incoming" directory in them :)
added on the 2001-05-27 18:14:32 by ryg ryg
and maybe a bit more 'intelligent' duplicate prod checker.. 8)

another request to make pouet.net more useful :
can we have a link in the main menu (under the logo) to acces the search engine ?
why ? because, search is only on home page actually, and when you are in other place on the website, you must clic the logo to reload the homepage for access the search, it's too long
so Analogue, can we have this new entry to the main menu ? thanx !-)
- about the size:
impossible to do unless I host all the files, sorry :/

- about the download links: the mirrors links are there to find mirrors, and about the more-than-1-file-prods, I prefer to zip/rar all the disks in one file instead of enhancing the so-complicated submit system (in submitters eyes I mean)

- about the search quick acces:
added to the todolist =)

thanks all for your ideas !

hm, wouldnt it be possible to include filesize in the submit area, i mean, some of _us_ submitters might be nice enough to check that out / enter it.. :)

i also have a new feature suggestion.

how about some kind of indicator showing which bbsforums has new posts since the users last visit (by storing cookies or something)

using cookies could also be quite nice for the submission part of pouet, instead of having to type in login each time :)

what do you think analogue ?

oh damnit, ignore my previous suggestion for the forum, i just realized it lists the last updated post from top2bottom on the mainpage :) d0h

well, maybe *some* of us will be entering zip size to prod descriptions, but *most* of us won't.. this feature could be really useful if it was automated somehow.. 8]

Really useful? I doubt it.. you should have a general idea of how big a c64 demo or 64k intro is. :) And most DOS demos are around the 1-2mb zip range, Windows demos the 4-5mb zip range, etc.
added on the 2001-05-31 14:06:59 by phoenix phoenix
windows demos are around 1-15 mb range imho 8) but okay, you're right.. as long as I'm on T1 link size doesn't really matter to me.. 8))
added on the 2001-05-31 16:25:29 by bhead bhead
actually, 64k intros tend to be around 50-500k (björ7000 ring a bell?) :)

and demos are getting larger by the day..

but yeah, it might be a useless feature for highbandwidth users, but im still on a 33.6 :/
added on the 2001-05-31 23:21:46 by jelly jelly
... normally you get an idea of the size upon starting the download (the ftp server sends the size :)
