AmigaOS 4.x

category: general [glöplog]
So... there were quesions in the oneliner. Got a bit much for the oneliner.

AmigaOS 4.x is a continuation of the old operating system that Commodore used to ship with Amigas. It is even based on the Commodore source codes, although a large chunk of it has been rewritten from scratch, and all the old assembly and BCPL code is long since gone. Runs on PowerPC processors only, but if you run it on a Commodore Amiga with a PPC card, you can still bang the hardware if you like.

Is it useless? Well, its not useless, in the sense that i use it every day, but i'd imagine most of you lot wouldn't want to even if you could.

What do I use it for? Programming, mostly. I enjoy coding for it.

I also use it for e-mail, www, irc, msn, hivelytracker, C64 coding (VICE), games (not all open source SDL games are crap. Just most of them :).

Is it worth spending a load of money on? Depends. Again, probably not for most of you.

I bought an AmigaOne XE-G4, and it was expensive, but i think it was worth it since i've used it pretty much every day since (well, not before i got OS4 on there, i hardly used it at all when it was a slow linux box :).

So there you go. Commence pouetisation. I will try and answer any serious questions posted :-)

AMIGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
Why does it only work on PowerPC?
added on the 2008-10-09 15:31:32 by noname noname
Because thats all that the people developing it have targetted.

When they started, PowerPC was a logical choice. The lead developers have expressed an interest in porting it to x86, but its not going to happen for manpower and cash reasons, apparently.

plus, amiga os4.x is coded by these bald geek twins:

well, the system itself costs more than a netbook/cheap notebook with win/linux. so... hardcore fans only.

how's the support for 3d acceleration?
added on the 2008-10-09 16:54:56 by Frequent Frequent
Lol are those two developers watching a demo there?

Well it makes sense, watching demos is the only thing an amiga is actually good for. ;)

I dunno. I actually like using it for all the things i listed above, and i didn't even mention demos in that list.

@Frequent
Not great, but getting better.

If there will be available some affordable hardware that can run AmigaOS4.x, Im totally jumping onboard the Amiga Ship again ;)

Especially if this comes true:

The PlayStation 3, PowerPC Macintoshes, and mobile devices are also viable OS 4.1 targets. A Hyperion developer told me that not only has the OS been run on a PS3, but they have even tested support for the seven SPU units in the Cell processor.

anybody who knows a bit about how development on PS3 looks like will laugh himself to death hearing that obvious bullshit about running anything on a stock PS3. do you know that Amiga-zealots have been running a bounty to buy Friedens a console? ;)
added on the 2008-10-10 10:15:46 by Fei Fei
on the ps3 i surely would give it a try!
even if i had to buy me one first..
but then i had some really nice hardware for the money..

@Fei
Actually, the Friedens themselves said that that particular quote is not accurate.

Also, one person started a bounty, Hans Joerg said that even if they bought him a PS3, it probably wouldn't result in a port, and he never commited to a port. I don't know why anyone even donated. Theres no need for the sneering tone of your comments, though.

The PS3 was considered for an official port of OS4.x, but it was decided that without proper GPU access, there would be little point. Especially as OS4.1 introduced a GPU accelerated GUI.
added on the 2008-10-10 11:04:54 by xeron xeron
well you could take one or two of the cores and use them for raytracing the gui with all it's 3d glory ;)

The thing is, with the third party OS support, you have a frame buffer, and one of the SPUs copies the contents of the frame buffer to the GPU, so its not even a framebuffer in video memory.

It was deemed too crappy to support. I don't know, i don't make these decisions. Feel free to email them if you think they're missing something obvious.

i think we all should.
Amiga OS pimped by the demoscene.

xeron: probably wouldn't result? probably is not a good word here. it leaves some room for hope. why not state it clearly it's bullshit to even suggest such a port being possible. the sneering tone you sensed right in my comments originates in the old days when Amiga users were the cutting edge of the computing community and the scene. now it's mainly a bunch of disillusioned zealots with crazy ideas like that. i'd prefer amiga to die in glory than continue like what happens now, trials, feeding on people's hope and all.

See, theres no need to be so sneering and negative.

I'm not a disillusioned zealot, and most of the people I converse with within the Amiga community don't fit that description either. Pretty much all the people I speak to who use AmigaOS/MorphOS/AROS these days see it as a fun hobby, something they enjoy using.

The people you referring to are a vocal minority.

Morphos > OS 4
@Carbon

I strongly disagree. I sold my Pegasos because I didn't like MorphOS as much as OS4.

They're both good, though.

@havoc

I was just looking at my old threads. I hadn't seen Fei's reply, and wanted to respond.
