720x400 mode issue (13h and textmode)

category: general [glöplog]

I have 19" LCD screen. 13h graphmode (used by many DOS demos/intros, including most of 256B ones), and standard textmode (Windows & Linux fullscreen consoles, DOS) - both use the same physical resolution 720x400, as I can see in OSD info. The small problem is that these modes are shifted on the screen. I mean, if I have 13h displayed properly, well matched horizontally to the screen, the textmode is shifted to right and I have black margin on the left side, about 10 pixels width. And if I set textmode properly, 13h mode is shifted to left. Automatic matching requires only pressing one button, but it's a bit irritating - is there any solution for this?

Try DOSBox, you can set the resolution you want there...
13h is 320x200 with doubled scanlines afaik...

I press the automatic button thing too in my screen, I wish there was a better solution but I have stick to it.

Another thing I hated when I got an LCD screen was the uneven pixels when it scales from it's natural resolution to 320*200 for example in old demos. Effects with half grid different pixels, half scanline effects, those fake RGB modes in demos from Orange and other groups, those harsh patterns are destroyed or get ugly with the scaling.

Also, when for example I have moving white dots, because something is slow with the LCD or something, they are like grey, I mean more time should they stay in the same position to lighten the leds enough so that they don't seem darker than they are. Maybe it doesn't happen in newer LCD screens? Also for the same maybe reason smooth scrolls are kinda weird and not as smooth or perfect looking in my eyes. Can't explain..

For those reasons I miss a CRT for oldschool PC demos :P

Feel Happy with what u have
I got a recent 3d card (nvidia 7xxx series) i paid high price last year and there is no way to display any 13h mode at all since card not implement it

if asked program simply crash (windows, pure dos , no way)

funny when u want to watch 256b or develop one of these

ok dosbox exists but , developping things at 5fps is *very* painfull

if you use a dvi link, the data bandwidth is not high enough with a 320x200 mode (minimum should be somewhere near 512x384). dvi requires a minimum data transfer rate.

pmdata, how comes i can watch fullscreen (scaled and unscaled) 320x200 on my 20" tft widescreen using dvi?

oh ok yeah it's not fullscreen when unscaled, i meant the program is running in fullscreen-mode and mixed that up lol

oh and (sorry *g*) you can try turning your screen off and back on again (after a few seconds), when these resolutions are set. it _may_ save the configuration and reuse it the next time. my old display did that, haven't tested that yet on my new one (because i never needed to.)

What? Is there a video card not supporting 13h??? Stay away from me!!!

-Disable graphics device driver in device manager
-Watch anything in 13h (with default vga drivers)
-Enable graphics device driver in device manager
Oh. Good idea!

Also does anyone know where the heck is the option to downgrade the OpenGL in RivaTuner? Although I have a radeon and not an nvidia and maybe it does not exist there, but yesterday I couldn't watch the demo Meteor, decided to download eye's suggestion but couldn't find the damn option!!!
