popularity ratings?

category: general [glöplog]

Hoestly I dont quite understand how the popularity ratings work...

How is it possible, that the first overall "top 10 prods"-entries are:
1. heaven seven
2. fr-08: .das .produkt
3. tube

but the top 3 from the "top 10 intro prods" are:
1. heaven seven
2. fr-019: poem to a horse
3. fr-08: .das .produkt

strange... or am I missing something here?

brain missing, insert wood.
This is the proof that BIZK / ANIMAL_PORNHEADS is the bestest pixel-artist in the W0RLD!

I guess my brain must be missing too.

Top 5 intros:
1. heaven seven -- 79% popularity
2. fr-019: poem to a horse -- 16% popularity
3. fr-08: .das .produkt -- 100% popularity
4. Planet Potion by potion -- 10% popularity
5. antimoney by threestate -- 41% popularity
i think the exact recipe how to combine popularity and number of thumbs to the front page top ten is the best kept secret in the pouet world. maybe, if you give some more thumbs to fr-019, we get more data to analyse the algorithm... :-)

function pointsfortopten($prod) {
global $analogue;
return max(109 - 10*$analogue->placement($prod), 0);
}

hm? the actual recipe is quite easy actually, atleast if i'm not totally mistaken:

top 10 page: sort by (rulez_votes-sucks_votes)
front page: sort by (rulez_votes-sucks_votes)*visits_of_prod_page

popularity is 100*visits_of_prod_page/highest_number_of_visits_on_a_prod_page, so we can use that as a reference.

now, let's calculate it: for heaven 7 we get

105 rulez-8 sucks=97 points for the top 10 page, times 79% popularity is 7760 points for the front page

fr-08:

95 rulez-17 sucks=78 points for the top 10 page, times 100% popularity is 7800 points for the front page (i.e. it wins only by an inch. that also explains why heaven7/fr-08 were frequently switching places for some months).

fr-019:

97 rulez-1 sucks=96 points for the top10 page, times 16% popularity is 1728 points for the front page (which explains why it isn't listed there).

planet potion:

68 rulez-0 sucks=68 points for the top10 page, times 10% popularity is 680 points for the front page (so it also isn't listed)

and finally, frontpage top10 place 3, tube:

83 rulez-4 sucks=79 points for the top10 page, times 78% popularity is 6162 points for the front page.

---

and analogue, now that we've got your algorithm, why not change popularity to "popularity in the last 2 months", or atleast make a seperate "current" and "all-time" charts with the "current" charts on the front page? would be a lot fairer IMHO - new productions have virtually no chance to get in the top10 by now.

ryg: wohoo! this is reverse engineering at its best! great idea.

So,. with fewer words, popularity counts only the main page, not in the top-ten section. Hmm...

hmmm. thanks for the test data.

fr-019 just got more thumbs than heaven seven, and whoops- fr-08 is #1 in the front page again. fr-08 became #2 in frontpage when it moved down to third place in top 10. now the difference between fr-08 and heaven seven in the top ten ranking is equal again, and the old state in the front page is back. fuck this is confusing. anyway.

mabe it's something like

popularity - toptenranking
popularity * (x - toptenranking)

oh, the front page is only updated daily or so, therefore the lists may be (even more) off sync for a few hours.

I guess the Exceeders and the Farbrauschers are clicking intensely on the links to their own top intros these days. It`s hard to stay on the top these days :)

Wain: no

everybody who visits pouet for the first time clicks on the top ten, starting with the best, continuing until he sees an uninteresting production.

therefore once you made it into the front page top ten, your popularity will rise and rise and rise, making it very hard for newer productions to compete.

but i admit: for the lucky few sceners who don't get flamed for every bit they create, pouet and the diversity of pouet-charts is really fun, and checking your status each day may even help a bit...

oh, i almost forgot: best way to increase your popularity is to make an unpopular demo like fr-08, so that a flame-war starts and everybody has to check regulary... arrogant behavour can help a lot, too.

the downside is that you have to read all the hard critics (or the stupid crap) some people write, sometimes it takes two years until you get the recognicion you think you deserve.

i definitly support the "popularity in the last 2 months" idea. it's way too hard to get onto the front page. fr-019 should be the first, that's obvious.

btw you farbrausch people have too much spare time. go make that final instead :)

chaos: but this only works if you still have more thumb-ups than thumb-downs, though.

So in some cases it might be a good idea to create 20 fake accounts for self-voting. ;)

I support that two months chart, too. (Hmm, I should create 20 fake accounts stating the same in this thread to emphasize my point...)

I also want two months charts.
Indeed, whomever get's to the top 10 stays there for the reasons chaos mentioned. I guess that means that tube was reeeeally great :-) I am pro for 2 months charts as well.

ryg: you scare me, man... :-)

Looking at "latest released productions" (front page) , and then clicking on "more..." that first page
bears no resemblance to whats in the box... is this the same effect or am I just on crack?

Timejump --) 2008

Excuse me, does it still work the same as explained here?

Or is the popularity calculated differently anno domini 2008 ?
