So, this "elites only" thing which I saw repeated in all of the invitations released at Revision: Is that for real? Or is it just some humour?
added on the 2019-04-23 00:04:55 by fizzer fizzer
You have to apply. So it's probably real. You maybe should give it a try. I could imagine you are probably considered to be "elite enough". ;)

I'm flattered, but I should express my feeling that the phrasing doesn't sit well with me. I don't like the idea of separating out 'the best people' from others in front of the Revision audience where I imagine most people are new and don't have top-3 releases yet etc.

It's probably just a matter of language, since to a native english speaker like me the word "elite" is strongly exclusionary. For the record I'd feel sick to use that word in honestly describing myself.

I've never been at UC so take this with a grain of salt, but I've always felt that their "elite only" branding is more a way of saying "invite only" with a touch of arrogance-for-comedic-effect than anything. The whole "we're elite and you're not so fuck off" -attitude from the old days isn't really what we talk about and celebrate anymore when we talk about oldskool, and a good thing too.

But yeah, intent isn't everything and I can see how their branding might put a lot of people off.

fizzer: Have a look at UC8 pics on slengpung to get an impression how elite (or not) everything is :)
The "Elite only" stuff is half historical, half satire, and ... erm ... half serious.

Here is your personal copy & paste service from the very first paragraph on the site:

Quote:
UC features a gigantic line-up of innovative, strange and bizarre competitions. The party always has been labelled as "Elite only", which again is not to be taken too serious. The background of this label is that back in the days major parties got infested with gamers and lamers, people not actually doing anything creative. Also, in those days actual fights at partys also happened. While setting up UC is a massive organizing amount, its organizers coming from a background of serious party organizing (Mekka & Breakpoint) wanted for once to be able to relax on a party they do themselves. As many aspects of the party are extreme, and some even outright dangerous, it is therefore important to be able to trust its visitors fully. This is why there is mandatory registration, "extreme vetting", and the location being kept secret. We simply need to make sure that you aren't lame, that you are able to handle whatever drugs you like to take - for example we don't want people who turn aggressive when drinking too much alcohol, which is kinda important if you have a boozing compo where people are drinking 25 liters of beer.

In reality: For people who's done releases in the scene but who we don't know we do research and ask around if they are nice to party with, and have ever caused any major physical trouble (getting onto other people's nerves while being too drunk etc) at one of our partys.

So, regard "elite only" as "the elite of having mad fun together", and if you have no problem with that, go ahead and apply, if not, not. :)

Let's close this with some scene gossip: 20 years ago, AEG / Smash Designs once was banned from the party after getting into a fist-fight and threatening to buy the property UC was held on to build an office building there so we could no longer do UC there. Yes, it IS a weird party.

Haha, nice story.

Too bad we can't come this year. It's a great party with nice locations!

Solving the captcha upon registration should prove enough that you belong to an elite group. ;P

I registered on the site, and I do appear in the "visitor list", but I think that is not enough to be "approved". Is there some bulk mailing coming soon? Maybe I'm too impatient :-)

You are too impatient. It should be all fine if you are on that list. :)

It's almost as if the APPROVED ELITEZ ONLY gimmick is becoming counterproductive on all fronts.

People who know me better know that I am often slow at understanding "underlying messages and puns". A fact which my close friends abuse to no end... But I get it know ;-)

At least we lovingly abuse it (in a non-abusive relationship kind of way) :p

UC9 is going to feature a huge amount of crazy light installation and useless technologies. Due to this, in addition to the usual compo/infodesk/beam-etc orgas, we are also looking for people who have fun doing strange installations.

So, are you able to solder? Do you like working with electronics? Are you willing to swim in the lake to do dangerous installations? Are you good with handling power? Are you a craftsman? Are you strong and able to carry around weird objects? Do you like to decorate things? Do you like electrical shocks?

If you can say "yes" to any of the above, please apply for the UC9 orga-team.

Due to the nature of some of our compos we are also interested in anyone who has first-responder skills. Wanna jump into the lake Baywatch-style to rescue drowning sceners? Here is your chance!
