The IBM 7094 Computer at Bell Labs Sings
"A Bicycle Built For Two" ("Daisy"), circa 1961

Remember the scene in "2001: A Space Odyssey" when the HAL 9000 computer sang "Daisy" as he slowed to a halt? Of course you do. Now hear the original computer which inspired that scene. In 1961, this performance was generated on an IBM 7094 computer at Bell Labs. The vocal was programmed by John Kelly and Carol Lockbaum. The accompanyment was programmed by Max Mathews.

Clearly, as Intrinsic has pointed out, this was not an attempt to concatenate all the events, minor or small, of the entire demoscene. It should have gone without saying that such a level of granularity is simply impossible in under an hour. Or a day for that matter. ;-)

It should be obvious, but since Intrinsic missed the point all together. One of the messages you could take away from this presentation is that we as people have been taking devices, basic devices such as the typewriter or the teletype, and have used them for creative tools far beyond their inventors wildest dreams. Something expressive, imaginative and artistic. Surely this is something that's been ongoing since the dawn of time, and this theme transfers right over to our scene as well. :-)

Oswald: Yes i know the Atari never was, but i just wanted to mention it's name so it just didn't seem like i was being an Amiga fanboi ;p

For those of you who felt that the 320kbps version just wasn't of high enough quality, we now offer the uncompressed WAVE version. Additionally, we offer Flac, Ogg Vorbis and MP3 in hi-fi/lo-fi versions or you can just stream the damn thing:
