Is there any sceners alive in .au?

category: general [glöplog]
Hi Guys..

I am just wondering if there is any (active) sceners that live in Australia ?? If so, remember that Nullabor 2006 is very soon.

I'm not sure if Ript and the guys are still active, but they still seemed to be around a while ago..

I'm wanting to become active but need to find myself a coder. I'm a musician/graphician in adel.

Hollowman: Did you tell Highlander he's kicked? Cuz we still refer to him as Highlander/FLT (:

(He's still in Adelade, last I checked.)

Chromium and Wyrehead of Accession are in .au ... Reefa/Ex-Danish Gold is in .au and I should prolly just move him to Accession anyway but I haven't TOLD 'im I'm moving him, he won't really care (:

fdisk: Unfortunately, Wyre left Adelade and moved to Melbourne a bit ago... and I don't think the rest of the planet can deal with you being a half hour off. Maybe some Newfie coders in ca will be able to deal with it...
Oh, and I told a local ( * <- perth ) friend I know that it's there and HOPEFULLY he'll be there, but I dunno as he may have to stay glued to the WoW screen or something equally lame.

That's because after hearing it a thousand times, your brain doesn't go "BZZZZZZZZZZZZT WRONG" anymore. Well, it does, but the cord fried so it's no longer sending demoshock.
atleast he didnt say tracker ^^

In the demoscene, it's "Graphician" which is a scenish word. In English the phrase would be "graphics artist" in the same way that it's "ascii artist" or "ansi artist." That is: we never put 'artist' on the end back in the day... it was just 'graphics' or 'ascii.' Whaddya do? "Graphics" what's your job? "graphics"

It's just one of those things where my brain goes "but but but... the guy who's closer to a magician is the coder!" and with enough beer it stops complaining.

last time i heard anything from highlander was in 1997, perhaps if he was better at keeping in touch he would know ;) and if he was kicked out, then i guess it was when duke and sun dancer were in charge, or atleast before i rerjoined, when vodka was the only active member left on c64.

but sure, consider him an FLT member, i dont mind as long as he doesnt start a webdesign company called Fairlight Dezign or something ;)

so i see that there is not many around :( . not like the old days of Cydonia/Decay/Liberty/Devious Design etc..

Now there is nothing.. it is a real shame.

then again i think there are too many WOW addicts. :(
Yo, I live in Melbourne.

as for the local scene.. well yeah, there's not much. buckleys actually.

Which is kind of strange. I keep running into creative, techy-minded people down here whom seem to be interested in the concepts - even a few whom know what demoscene is.. - one or two whom are even avid 'inactive' sceners/followers... and at best even product hackers / makers.

What i find so different about (at least the Melbourne) 'scene'.. or perhaps so startling.. is the paradox. We all know that melbourne's full of musos - from awesome chiptune makers, through to film composers and everything in between. Sadly the majority aren't technically minded, but i believe an underlying minority is.

And then there's the graphicians... which if you wander through say Swinbourne or RMIT you can find them, mostly with a very high quality standard of work. As an aside of this scene you have a vibrant animation core in the city, supported by (i kid you not) Melbourne's 15 film/animation festivals each year.

Then lastly - and a little twice-removed, we have the coder guys here. Again mostly computer-science uni types, many of them from overseas. Again looking at the IT courses of say Melbourne or the Uni of Ballarat, there's certainly a lot of guys around whom like their code.

I think then the challenge is getting scene stuff into the eyes and ears (and hopefully hearts and minds) of the comp.science types... sadly many remain obivious and end up venturing in more traditional money-making coding.

That isn't to say there wasn't something cool happening wayback when... the .au scene did have a real party once - Coven, which happened a couple of times in Adelaide. This was back in 2000/'01 ish, and not a mammoth event but traditional enough to be lovely. (and from memory, was largely amiga influenced).

But last few years has seen very little.. which is a shame. Fortunately some good things seem to be happening in WA, with apparantly a party - Nullabor - happening soon. This is both good and bad - good that som action is happening.. but also a little depressing (not overwhelmingly.. just somewhat) as it highlights some of the real problems with .au scene efforts: a) the coutry is so big... that getting from perth to Adelaide, let alone melbourne, is seriously long distance (Perth-Melb. is ~3,500 kms or AUD$550 return). 2ndly, The due to a number of reasons, the party (like other previous efforts) is lacking in compos (no music, no wild, no fast, no sponsors, no easy location/beer & camping opportunites). Nonetheless, i wish them ALL the best.

As for groups: Disaster Area [DA], Food/0x769.au and um Kaolin, come to mind (mental blank... there's lots more all in a folder on other compy, i'd have to get back to you :S)

Oh should quickly mention Gyr's good work in getting the online .au compo running each and this year.. which is great to at least see something up, as well as the 'tradition'. Again, at least seems to get past one of the above hurdles OK.

so yeah.. in short i think there's a lot of potential.. in any case i think that embracing the animation scene and spinning off that, and get coding involved (erm.. i hear pizza helps).. is probably the way to go.

Ctrix and me - we'll be at Assembly '06 and a few other big ones (hopefully Buenzli, Scene Event, Evoke) - XD
hopefully meet some slengpung types, veterans and event organizers and see how to really throw a party.
