2nd reality vs. desert dream

category: general [glöplog]

hello.

I just watched those two pieces of history in a row, yesterday, and I have reached the conclusion that the first one has many many points in common with the second one.

did anyone noticed this?

- the opening: the same titles, the same "space" theme, the same samples, also, could it be?
- the transactions: the "get down" voice part in 2nd reality and the blue bars in desert dream.
- the rotozoom (same feeling).
- the dot tunnel...
- etc 8-)

let me know what you think of this
(p.s. dd was released in april 1993, afaik, before 2nd reality,then...)

Yes, but who gives a glop... There were so many aliens in that film I am surprised I wasn't in it.

On the topic, megademos of that time, especially in the new pc scene, with the crappy pc's of the time (Trident 8900 anyone?) had very similar design. I can also remember Warp/Legend Design and The Journey/Keen Like Frogs. They were quite similar too.

desert dream has no good code. sorry, no, just cheap fakes and things done better years before. future crew was groundbreaking. desert dream has very good sync of sound and graphics, but second reality has the kick ass soundtrack of it all. desert dream has a lame and boring intro. second reality builds up atmosphere during the intro and when the intro is over, it rocks really hard.

chaos you are so wrooong =)
i cant say if the code is bad, but when it was released people said it was a great show of coding skills. (im NOT a coder ;-)
but both demos is fab, but dd wins because the music is FAB!!!!
i like the music in 2:nd reality ofcource, but i think laxitys opening song and the techno music parts kicks ass. (the opening song is the best)

btw... the best songs ever made
Laxity teknochunk (or something) (Kefrens)
jesper kyd´s Globaltrash3 (hardwired)
Peter salomonsen´s Garbage collection (PMC)
Gregs Odyssey soundtrack (Alcatraz)
Animotion by Tip/mantronix (PHA)
Matthew simmonds Madness (Anacrhy)
Radix/Lluvias sol (Sunflower)

by the way.. the last statements doesnt belong to this thread, but i turned nostalgic :)

We are comparing different things here, how can the comparison be fair?

In '93, Amiga was way ahead of the PC technically and the Amiga scene was much more mature than the PC one, which was represented by a handfull of legendary groups like FC, Triton, Sonic PC etc. Desert Dream was a fabulous demo, with a killer intro scene/music (imho), and pumping techno soundtrack, not to mention the chainsaw effect. On the other hand Second Reality did things on the PC we had never seen in the past, it was extremely well designed and Purple Motion's music makes me shiver even today. Second Reality will always have a place in my heart since I was born a PC scener :-P but both demos are legendary, extraordinary and should be (imho) respected by anyone, even those who don't like them. Hell, ask any non-scener if they know any demos, they will most probably only remember these two and a couple of others.

my 2 cents of course.

Personally, I give Desert Dream the edge. I guess it's not a favourite among coders, but I consider other aspects such as the design, synch, atmosphere, graphics and music far superior to Second Reality.

But as an old time Amiga scener, my opinion is probably quite subjective.
