spec needed to run Number one / another one

category: general [glöplog]

Hi,

I'm thinking it's time to upgrade my 8 yr old PC and was wondering what I needed to run the cncd demo "number one/ another one" and the ASD demo from thye same compo. (or any more recent "killer" demos...)

could I get away with a new GFX card (currently got a gforce gtx960), or do I need to go up to windows 10 as well?

(yep - still not upgraded from win 7!!)

Thanks
they don't run on your 960? or do you mean minimally-60-fps-all-the-way-run?
they take several minutes to load, and then run at about 10-20 frames per minute, also take several minutes to close them from task explorer!

yes - I did say per minute!
I can report back with a RTX 2060. I just ran it again a few seconds ago, and it seems smooth in HD (so at least 20-30 FPS, with vsync) CPU is just a Ryzen 5, but that's not as important i guess. I can't confirm you need Win10, but i'd recommend it ;)

you also need quite some RAM to run it. On my old machine I had 8GB and it was too less (quit after loading)

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, i have 16GB, and loading took about a minute.

So after a bit of scientific research (TM) with my i7-6600 (16GB) and my GTX970 (4GB) it chugged along here with what graphics researchers would call "interactive frame rates" at 1080p, and it completely filled CPU and GPU memory. That's probably the deciding factor. :)

yup, smash's stuf is known for eating VRAM for breakfast :)

no/ao's precalc is pretty badass for your regular RAM too... i am glad i have 32GB :D
FWIW, RAM usage peaked at 10GB here for the last few seconds of precalc, after which it went down to around 5GB. So 8GB with a large enough swapfile might (TM) work.
Ryzen 7 2700 is also mostly bored, sitting at around 3% (of 16 cores) throughout the whole demo. Just my RX570 was a bit overwhelmed for about half of the demo. :D

Oh, and if you want to upgrade to modern hardware, forget about Windows 7.
it ran ok on my old 1070 (overclocked superjetstream bla bla thing) but runs even better on my old 1660Ti... so the latter is an affordable option (~220e) if you don't wanna pay double for a 20xx or triple for a 30xx :P
It was developed on 1080 Ti’s with 16 GB of system memory. Anything around there will do nicely. Anything below that, and you’ll have some chugging here and there.

yep, it requires a lot of VRAM (the penalty of being made on high end cards..).
if you dont have a lot of VRAM, it'll burn a lot of main ram - because directx uses system memory when VRAM runs out. if that happens it'll fall off a performance cliff.

it also needs at least the 10xx series architecture on NVIDIA. certain things that the demos uses heavily were really enhanced in that architecture. it'll also fall off a performance cliff on older series cards.

sounds like if you had a graphics card already you'll probably have to buy another one ::::::::)

Can we call a ceasefire on these cheesy demo name puns? ;)

So - is 4gb vram enough or do I need 6?
1080 Ti has 11GB of VRAM. Go figure...
So - what sort of spec does "ember dream" by adapt need?

also - any demos which need the features from the gtx1600 range?

Ta!
Peaked around 8 gb during Ember Dream and 12.5 during Another One (on 16gb card), good excuse to see them both again ;)

N1A1: GTX 2060 (6GB VRAM), Ryzen 3700X, 16GB DDR4, 1920x1080 vsync off - 38 fps average. Slowest part was the shopping cart and tiger run right after, at 17 fps. It hit the full 6GB a couple times, so 8GB VRAM is probably ideal.
