2. Nice nominations, nice demos, nice work. But why only concentrate on PC and Amiga demos, where is the rest of the scene?! I saw great C64 demos last year, GameBoy demos, even new NES demos and demos for pretty odd platforms. PC & Amiga is nice, but there's so much more that happened 2004. Well, I doubt a "best NES demo" is even a sain category, but an "Oldskool demo" could be something. Anyway, with the categories that are now I get a very strong "PC-scene wibe here (oh and amiga demos 'cause an amiga demo can look as opengl and nice as pc')".

I would like to see Ikanim by loonies on the list.

And I agree with pyschad; tho I will also say last year one of the winners was of course Aura for Laura, on PS/2. But a category for 'non-mainstream' would be nice. Mind you, I think c64 may be a bit mainstream (:

Anyway, there should be a 'best Ikanim' category for Loonies Ikanim.

I'd like remind you that we've nominated among others entries on VIC-20, GBA, Amiga, Amiga PPC, XBOX and PS2 platforms, and a bunch of animations and wild demos, too. It just happens to be so that 95% of the releases are nowadays done on PC and thus it's no wonder that most of the nominees are also on PC. Planet Potion won the best intro award in 2003, Aura for Laura best effect award in 2004. We're not bypassing any platforms.

Many people have been requesting lately best alternative/8-bit/oldskool platform category and we have to take a closer look if it's really an idea that would carry out long enough to realized in the future editions of the Scene.org Awards. However, that's for next year at earliest.

We're also planning to bring back a large scale poll on public's opinion regarding lot of issues (not just the awards categories) after Breakpoint. Don't worry, your voices are being heard.

cheesy, blala: i totally agree, but it appears a vast majority of the scene.org awards jury of this year doesnt. :( i totally fail the see the beauty of a 2fps world made of a 3d model generator.. O_o i would have also nominated rebirth, but alas there can only be 5 and diferent jury members have diferent personal opinions.. -_-

psychad: there has been serious considerations amongst the scene.org awards organizing team into having an oldskool/8bit best demo category next year. i strongly agree that certain platforms prods are beeing harmed by superior pc popularity during the juries hard task of comparing platforms.

matti: could you admit the possibility that perhaps some juries might be biasing their votes without aknowledging the fact themselfs? ;)

Any awarding process brings complaints along. The fact that public choices are well reflecting jury decisions kinda suggests that the jury well represents the demosceners average taste, which is the whole point, I think.

I don't really see any point in biasing one's judgement, since votes are kept secret and "self voting" isn't allowed... judges do it for their own fun, so no point is cheating.

(and, btw, I did quit the Awards jury this year :D)

I also want to point out that the scene awards rules, and that in no way did I think that anyone wasn't listening.

If it weren't for the scene.org awards, I'd never have actually seen PWP's Robotic Liberation, even tho it didn't win. Well, ok, I'd have wondered about it after it showed up on Nectarine, but. I wouldn't have gone looking for the video. Nor would I have considered getting a vic20.

Anyway, point is, it's not easy, y'all rule, and stuff.

Also Ikanim needs a category of it's own cuz it rules.

ps, and what is biased, then? nobody's truly objective on anything, and it's a good thing people have opinions and personal preferences on what is good and what is not. even the jury members. if somebody doesn't agree with you that doesn't automatically mean that person is biased. if we really nominated just pc releases (which isn't the case) then i'd agree with you. just my 2 cents...

kusma: there's no written rules on what qualifies a jury member. however in practice forming the jury goes something like this:

1) active scene.org staff members who want to participate have privilege in being part of the jury
2) other jury members are invited to participate by these initial scene.org staff jury members based on the following criteria:
- a jury member has to be either an active demoscener (creating demos or following scene closely)
- the line-up of the jury should represent a variety of different countries (max. 2 jury members from the same country)
- all jury members should be openminded on all releases, not depending on platform, genre, etc.
- a person that has the ability and will to watch 100+ demos within short timespan, fighting with technical problems, messing around with emulators and video codecs, vote in between couple of times and in the end write 50 columns of feedback to all of the nominees
3) if a jury member quits he/she has a right to suggest a replacement, preferably from the same country or otherwise not resulting in more narrowminded composition of the jury.

hitchhikr, i'm not a big fan of individual awards for the following reason: in lot of cases it's not a single person who's responsible for certain area in demos. generally it's all about teamwork. e.g. how to define who really did the design / direction in award winning demo from a group with 7 active members? true, sometimes it's easy, one guy did the music and the other one coded the thing. but nevertheless i'm still a bit dubious regarding individual prizes. something to find out in our upcoming poll, how the people feel generally about this, though...

You just know that demos from the same groups will be chosen every time for every category.

I mean, it's totally biased and a really bad representation of the scene. The same demos appear in all the categories.

Look at the best graphics category for example. Where the fuck is "D (stands for)" by Farbrausch in the nominations? Clearly one of the most graphically impressive demos ever! And some of those nominees definitely don't deserve to be there!

Yeah, Xmix is a fucking great demo, but it doesn't deserve to be nominated for it's soundtrack or original concept!

The public's choice award is the only objective category in my opinion, but even then it's just the most exposed demos that will get the votes.
