origins / meaning of group names

category: general [glöplog]
We started out as two seperate groups, F-raid and Spiet and later merged into Guideline. F-raid was loosely related to the annoucnement of a certain dancetrack (Moonman- Afraid) on the radio, Spiet meant too go fast. We choose Guideline later on. I could identify with the new name by picturing a lighthouse that could guide. Also if you need to start something, it is wise to use guidelines: either as physical lines on paper or concrete as well as methods, rules and instructions for enagement. I coined 'Effiency' after the merger but we settled on Guideline.

Numtek was based on a soft sound adjacent to a harsh sound, illustrating contrast.

DC5 (The Dennis Courtney Five) was kind of a joke (in that there didn't have to be five members), but Dennis Courtney (DennisC) is of course real and in the group. The name was inspired by old-timey band names like The Max Weinberg 7 from Late Night with Conan O'Brien.. and I suppose the other DC5 (The Dave Clark Five).

Hornet came from the name of the server that hosted the archive before it moved to ftp.cdrom.com.. there was also a Wasp server, I believe.

Kosmic/KFMF was Kosmic Free Music Foundation, a name change from Kosmic Loader Foundation when we realized we mostly did music and not "loaders" anymore. KLF was an obvious rip of The KLF (Kopyright Liberation Front?).. the BBS HQ was even called TranCentral II.

Oh, and BAOUM.. the name came from a NAID party t-shirt, some French-language explosion sound effect. :)

First just Ivory, as suggested by pumpuli. But because there's already an old group called ivory and i wanted a more early-2000s techy-name so I added labs., therefor Ivory Labs. but we'll often just use "Ivory".

Citrus came up with Aberration Creations because he thought it would be such a cool idea to have a group name which is so ridiculously incoherent to get shortened in the greetings part :P (so we end up with Abr, ABC, BrCr and whatnot). THANK YOU CITRUS

That's the album name, which also happens to contain a track by the name Ephidrena. (The album is under Amorphous Androgynous of course, a pseudonym of the FSOL guys).

Now that I think about it, I can't really remember how Conspiracy came to my mind. But once it did, it made a lot of sense to all of us and seemed quite apt for a group that was secretly formed by people from various other groups, with a single goal of showing what we can do.

(First runner-up was 'Spore'.)

Paraguay was a random name suggestion that came up in geeg girl meeting at ALT 2013 and we liked it. The group needed a name and we just didn't have any ideas so we outsourced it. :P

Hackers name comes from the movie Hackers 2

--> Hackers name comez from ze Demogroup Kewlerz

-my first nickname was CrackHero (1985, no releases on C=64. Yes, superlame, been at age of 7 at that time) -> CrackMan (early c=64 crackerscene fame!)
-second nickname was MayDay (1988, no releases on Amiga. There was the biggest german techno-party going by this name!)
-i settled on cOcOOn as my nickname (1991, Amiga, many releases, only 20% still available in the Internet, Group = BoNZai Broz.)
-changed nickname to my realLife-nick "Hardy" around 1995 when i was in too many groups already to still be productive as a coder! (left scene around 1997/1998 when i was a member of Scoopex and Dual Crew-Shining (DCS). No releases sadly, altho there is a halfdone cracktro for Scoopex in the pouet-db atleast!)
-went back to "cOcOOn" when i returned to the scene in 2006/2007. (after having learned about there being a major group by the same name i....
-renamed finally to "hArDy.", again my realLife-nick anyway, since i was 5 years of age...even my grandMom calls me by this name! ;)

Groups:
I invented several Groups when i was still a kid, but the first group i got asked to join in because of my skills was:
-"XYZ" (chosen because of "end-of-the-list-for-sure!")
-co-invented: TIM, The Iron Men (just because Logos for this Abbreviation were easy to do and even allowed creativity while painting a lot! The real inventor will get to see this somewhen and wonder: "You still owe me for your "Tanja"-Demo! :P" )
"XYZ" was "ZYX" ;)
skarab: atleast thats where I got my "c0c00n"-nickname from! ;) -> le filme! (it was even spelled out better with the 0-s inside the textform! :D )
Tornado, who happens to be the FSOL-horse’s ... BROTHER! Horse sample conspiracy unfolds

Our intros were originally released just as "by Juippi, Trilkk and Warma" in the compo slides at Assembly, and if I remember correctly, as a group here in Pouet. This got kind of clumsy later on when Warma did not taka part in every project, and especially when he and Ninave made Solitary Confinement. You can't just keep adding names forever.

So we simply took a name from an IRC channel where people were hanging out. "Faemiyah" is a completely made-up gibberish word.

(note: I believe there are numerous other groups that only named themselves later, when they had already released prods, Luminaire comes to mind for one)
