How do I get started?

category: offtopic [glöplog]
Thanks for all the help!

I am currently focusing on Mathematics and pure Computer Science. I am doing Competitive Programming problems on Codeforces to help me get a better understanding of CS.
Tbh, "pure CS" isn't needed that much to begin, you just need to be able to program, and the maths (linear algebra and analytic geometry) is needed for 3D graphics. Some "pure CS" is needed for more fancy things for very advanced 3D stuff, but that isn't required at all. Just try to make something small (starting from a template someone else made, if needed), try if it works, and look things up if you get stuck (or ask us on IRC :P ). I also think 'competitive programming' isn't really useful for that, because it puts the emphasis in a different place, but your mileage may vary.

Also, it's very likely that if you only start studying these things, you'll probably lose your motivation pretty quickly. That's why you should pretty much just start trying to make small things. (Small, because otherwise you'll hit some walls.)

yes, making demos isn't a science, it's an art. and with your first attempts, don't aim for a mona lisa, try drawing a stick man first and go on from there :)

nonsense!

quite a few of the more 'in the picture' democoders are garbage coders but they got one thing right, or rather two things: a keen eye and an effective lack of care for pretty solutions

wise man once told me: draw shit asap

i didn't listen but that don't mean you shouldn't

I think the wikipedia article does a much better job at informing newbies about the demoscene. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demoscene
