Atari 8bit demos, what hardware?

category: general [glöplog]
I have bought the cf card cartidge from lotharek. Maybe later I will get the ram expansion.
But for the moment, is there a list of demos that will still run on 64k only?
I tried to search for some atari site or something that separates them.
Or which should I try?

There are a lot of nice demos I found for 64k.
Now I have another problem, I load XEX but cannot load ATR.
I read on a forum but I don't understand much.

@Optimus:
Have you read that link?
Some ATR files are incorrect.
XEX is an exe file, as COM is too.

I see. So maybe I have to use a tool to correct it.

Maybe I need also the 1MB expansion to load ATRs?
When there are forums discussing these problems, they always discuss in connection with the U1MB.
Maybe the ATR needs extra memory to be loaded and emulated?
So,. maybe I forget about ATR atm.

My memory might be a li'll bit shrouded, but the ATR file is like a D64. Some ATR files are bigger than standard ones, but you shall check it on your own. There are some experienced Atarians here, so I hope they will give you a proper answer. Meanwhile, why not "play" with a popular Atari emulator and those ATR files on your PC to find out where is the issue.
Good luck.

Hi there!

I just got my Atari 800XL powered up (big thanks to Szeryf for supplying me a PSU!). It's a stock machine + SIDE2 expansion with CF Card. Question is what quality scene stuff I could run on this hardware? Is Ultimate the only way to enjoy demos on A8...?

Yeah, a memory expansion is pretty much required if you want to enjoy most of the productions out there. I highly recommend picking up an Ultimate, together with the SIDE2 it's a killer combo.

Hi Britelite, thanks for your reply, looks like Ultimate is the only way... I'm already working to get it done together with stereo, which is also quite handy.

Cheers.

It's been a long time since I had my 130XE hooked up, but with SV coming up and perhaps some new releases coming, it might be time!
The "Ultimate" that people are talking about, is it this one?
Doesn't seem all that expensive for a 1mb upgrade, but the installation does seem a bit tricky though. :/

Another vote here for the Ultimate 1MB upgrade. Lotharek and the team did a fantastic job designing and producing that kit :)
