Yes, after all it *is* easier to punch someone IRL
I might've gone a little overboard but it ain't the first time this "I'll lift along and do nothing tangible" person has tried to build himself by dismissing hardworking people.

And I'm sick of it. I'm 34 years old and an ex boxer, I know better than to touch anyone without a mutually signed contract validated by a state athletic commision. But fuck sometimes it's just too much.

I especially don't like the types who go behind your back and beat their partners.

As it's already been stated in this thread, this is a recurring phenomenon. I retired from the Amiga demo scene 20 years ago, but certainly felt the divide that started growing back then.

In 1991 I "modeled" my pathetic 3d objects on squared paper, but as the hardware got powerful enough to push ~100 polygons (and donuts got boring), I saw the benefit in being able to import objects etc. from 3ds4.

I/we started getting flak for demos that were labeled as merely a "3ds player". I still saw fun in trying to make an effective, versatile replayer with lotsa of homemade ingredients though, so I kept at it until the end.

The scene is what the participants make it, and I hope you guys work it out this time around and find some common ground, where the devs are enjoying themselves while producing something that will be appreciated by the bulk of the consumers. But I feel that if you wish to keep the "compo" element alive, you do perhaps need to come up with some more labels/categories to avoid the divide that is evident in this thread.
The demoscene will never survive without its roots.

What does it even mean? Should people start cracking again?

But it already did.

(Also I love simplistic declarative statements to be taken for granted.)

We're working out our issues! Guess I'll have to beat up a tree like most days.

large parts of what is the "mainstream" demo scene today doesnt even know, nor care, about these roots. and why would they?

thanks for the post, interesting to hear that the debate was going on before the sw/hw raster thing and -- even better! -- about the actual design stuff. I guess the solution will be the same slow migration. After all, coding inside an engine is still coding.

well this thread was an excellent start, had me cracking up a bunch!

Okay, if you take a look at the pyramid gloom posted on page one, I'm one of those "watches demos" dudes. Never been productive since 1699... but:

If an artist and a musician come together to make a great production, I give a shit about what tools they use. And yes, I think this is the real true scene spirit - show what you can do.

... drops the mic.

Okay, time for beeing a little bit more fine grained. What you see here is the art department unleashed of the chains we coders produce. And please don't underestimate this demo... it is amazing (shading, scripting, graphics, sound). And I wan't to quote gloom here:

Quote:
Let me ask: have you ever used UE? Because that comment reeks of ignorance. I don't think you know what UE actually is, how it works, or how much code is actually required to make something nice.

The nostalgic old days of rasterbars are over. End of story.

P.S. This discussion is toxic and full of shit. I expect the ZX scene to jump in and add to the drama.

Yes, the ZX category should be subdivided. ;)

@wbc\\bz7: Pffff! I'm with sol_hsa. Let's bring in the real drama...

P.S. Let me tell you a secret: some sceners are trying to rewrite scene history. Don't forget! And yes, they have websites. Can't explain, but it's like tubes. Something regarding plumbers.
