MS-DOS Lib/framework for xm/mod playback on SB/GUS

category: code [glöplog]

hi,
after a lot of years have gone by without doing old PC stuff I finally setup a 486 VLB System again, for pure nostalgia in demostuff and gaming...

I started to fiddle with ASM again and already played around with Mode-x etc, did some just for fun TSR-trainers and now would like to use sound, too.

I wanted to ask if there are some newer libs/frameworks available to autodetect the soundcard (SB/GUS) and playback xm/mod files etc. ? Sources in ASM would be nice.

Maybe someone has a clue if something new happened within the last 20+ years and if there is something useable around.

It would be awesome if it supports systems from 286 onwards but 386 would do fine, too.

any suggestions would be really appreciated

nothing new here, as there are lots of players/soundsystems for modules under DOS; from which I can recommend IMS 0.6 (Watcom C++ / 386+ protected mode, w/ sources, lots of formats, supports almost every soundcard around you :) or MIDAS (0.40a for realmode (MOD/S3M only, src inside) or 1.1.1 (protected mode, MOD/S3M/XM/IT/whatever :))

and also GUSPlay 1.5 for MOD/GUS only/realmode (but please gus-only sucks, or don't forget to make an SB version :)

MXMPlay is a good alternative to IMS (same coder iirc). http://www.cubic.org/sources.html

afaik pretty unstable and flawed (mustdie9x-incompatible and broken sync timers)

gus-only, so sucks by design :D but nice for small size prods
