Gathering 2005 : Your thoughts.

category: general [glöplog]
Hello All !

Gathering is coming quite soon (March), and I would like to know your opinion about this party. Is it worth it ? (It is a rather expensive journey).

Is it a good experience for a scener / quality of productions / other quirks .

I think you double posted

i'd rather go to breakpoint instead.

I'm not allowed to share my thoughts.
ShaneTheWolf: come on you big fluffy wolf, gimme a big hug and stop nagging the passers-by! :)

Navis: Your questions surprises me a bit since a"I AM YOU"music told me some days ago he'll show up at Breakpoint. And well, TG starts some days earlier but consists mostly of gamers, the scene part is rather small. Going to TG and BP is possible but from your location this should be pretty expensive. If you only want to TG to party with norway's superorganizer Gloom I'd suggest you (follow my plan and) come to Breakpoint at easter and visit Solskogen in june, he'll be there.
Amusic is indeed going to breakpoint, together with a demo we made for it. I myself won't make it, but was wondering why it is so popular (5500 people !), and why, even though they seem to organise it well, give good prices etc. - just like asm, people don't go..

because sceners prefer sceners to gamers?
added on the 2005-01-26 01:52:25 by keops keops
navis: its quite simple:

breakpoint: always been sceneonly, always been big for a sceneonly event (ever since it was refered to as mekkasymposium, which is not same party but shares some of the orgas and same date)

thegathering: has been non sceneonly for some 9? years now. a few of which (around 2000) were pretty disturbingly sceneless.

"real" sceners dont care about fancy prizes and lots of gamers praising them, they care about having a good time at a party with the max scene spirit presence possible. and breakpoint clearly beats tg in that. despite tg's recovery scenewise, unless something horrible happens on breakpoint sceners will keep trusting bp over tg for better scene spirit.

in laymans terms:
- bp has got a bonfire and random sceneboylove acts.
- tg wont even let sceners booze indoors.

navis: well, ps sums it up quite nicely - bp allows drinking inside, tg doesn't. :)

the gathering isn't "sceners only", but like asm it attracts many gamers beside the sceners. since the colliding-thing started happening with breakpoint, many sceners go to bp instead.

i think it also has something to do with location - assembly gets many sceners (but a huge part of them being finns) and the gathering does the same thing. unfortunately, it isn't easy to "pull" sceners from central europe when bp is happening at the same time. :)

apart from that i can only say that i myself am pretty darn proud of the gathering, and what it has become these last three-four years. in 2000 it was a dump, but now it is a cool place to be, even though there aren't 99% sceners in the hall.

if you do decide you want to stop by, send me a mail (bent@gathering.org) and i'll fix you up with some tickets.

I would like to add that while TG allows you to booze outside, norwegian police doesn't. And TG security won't let you IN again until you're sober. So you end up drifting outside for quite a few hours. And that's not fun when it's -5 degrees outside.
And if I'm not mistaken, prizes are higher in the game compos. So there should be no doubt as to whom is 'on top of the foodchain' :)

All respect to to Gloom and the rest of the scene crew, at least underage norwegian sceners have somewhere to go and meet eachother.
I've been to TG two times some years ago (97, 98), and I really miss it now.
While it was going on, it felt like it lasted too long, organizing was bad at times (waiting in line for hours and hours, getting yelled at), and there were few sceners. Besides this, it was illegal to drink, some of our equipment was stolen and it felt generally more like a gamer party than a demo party.
But I miss it! Thinking about TG gives me a good feeling. The atmosphere is great, looking out into the big hall at night is fantastic! Hiding, bending the rules a bit..
Maybe I'm getting too old though.. The average age at TG must be sth like 16? And at those times, all my group friends went. Now I'd be sitting there alone, surrounded by fps-playing teenagers. Or so I imagine..
Mad props to gloom though, for making it better!

madenmann: yeah - or ironicallly; not women, just foreigners. :)

dominei: you are wrong about the prizes. at tg04 the total set aside for game-compos were 78.000 NOK, while the democompos got 150.000 NOK, almost twice the amount. also, all 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes were consistantly higher in the demo-compos. :)

sprocket: that feeling is why many of the demosceners stick with tg, even in the organizing-crew. :) also; i'd like to add that we haven't had any theft-problem the last four-five years, and the average age is more like 20 (according to the ticketing-system). also, with our demoscene-area, you won't be sitting alone among fps-playing kiddies. :)

Reid: You -are- mistaken :) The prizes are higher in the scene compos, and have been for some time (even the year when 1st prize for CS was NOK 15000 and 1st prize for demo was NOK 15001). According to your logic we have now confirmed that the sceners reign supreme at TG :D

i really loved that kvasigen sponsored 1 NOK to keep the demo-prizes higher than the game-prizes :)

I really loved being able to pay my rent..
Well...I haven't been to any other party except Bpoin2k4
and to React 2002-3-4 but i don't know...a party having M$ as a sponsor is in my black list. I hope we won't see our demos been sold on ebay one day....

..and the winner of the "most unconstructive comment in this thread" goes to sybex. :)

for your information; all microsoft (norway, not the guys from the states) do is to help fund the party (and quite a bit of the demoscene prizemoney actually).

they (or any other sponsor for that matter) has no say in the choices the tg organizers make regarding the party. we are as independent as we want to be.

but, if having a microsoft-banner on a party website is enough for you to not go to that party, do as you like. :)

Hah...

I wonder in what universe does there exist a message forum where gamer people are complaining that they won't go to Breakpoint 2005 because there are too many asshole demosceners.
added on the 2005-01-26 20:02:18 by radman1 radman1
radman1: you don't have to search that hard - i've actually heard complaints from gamers about the "loud sceners" :) but yeah; it doesn't happen every day, that's for sure.
added on the 2005-01-26 20:16:27 by gloom gloom
Well, there are some sceners preferring TG over BP... I kinda doubt the reverse applies to some gamers tho... :)
