Nicest 3d-starfield?

category: general [glöplog]
Hi.
I wonder which demos got the nicest-looking 3d-starfields.
I know that the Enigma demo on Amiga got one of my favorite 3d-dot-starfields, but RSI Cebit'90 demo got a great a 3d-bob-starfield. The demo EXXOS-AtaAtaHogluHulu (WildCopper) got a nice dot-starfield (that turns 90 degrees, I think).

Thanks

One of the best imho is at the beginning of »Outland« by Rebels. Nice transition at the end.

There was one on amiga I remember being really cool, think it was 3D, and it had kind of a wobble to it like the stars were embedded in jelly. I vaguely remember the scroller saying it was a bug, but it was cool so they left it in...

No clue what the demo was though. Helpful.

What tomaes said. It's awesome. I've tried to replicate it on shadertoy but could not figure out a good way yet.

I love stars. Great examples there!

The one in Crystal Dreams 2 with the polygon scroller. Always loved that.

movAX13h: Last year, I did a shader called "supernova particles", which is effectively a supercharged version of that effect. :)

tomaes: It looks interesting but not quite like the starfield from second reality which has more and more stars until it looks like the black background becomes the new stars.

starfield in highres native hercules for an xt/at should be a nice target :)
Then do it! A starfield is not exactly rocket science.
It is if you really want to do it properly.

Yep. Doing "infinite" stars/particles in a shader is quite easy, doing it "properly" on a 386 is... a different matter.

(and depending on your definition of "proper", not even FC did it right. It's more like a palette-animated noise effect ;)

Rez's Century-intro/Razor1911 was awesome, I haven't seen it before. It took starfields to the next level by adding smoke. If it also had rotations later, like Enigma-demo's 3d-starfield, it'd be even better.

Outland by Rebels 3d-dot-starfield looked VERY much like Enigma's, it rotated also all ways.
Planet Rocklobster by Oxyron had similar 3d-dot-starfield to Enigma, but I think it had even more stars, so it looked very nice.

I watched Trsi & Alcatraz - Cyberlogik (1995) Amiga.
It had 3d-dot-starfield similar to Enigma too, but not as nice transitions between the rotations.

Thanks again.

1995 Demo by Kewlers & mfx got a very nice 3d-starfield too. There's no rotation though.
