If you'll be at Assembly 2017 and you like science fiction

category: parties [glöplog]

. . . then you might enjoy something happening the weekend afterward. The World Science Fiction Convention is coming to Helsinki, and it ain't no Comic Con. It's better. (And fan run not-for-profit, like a demoparty.)

The website still needs a bit of information, but to give you a sense of what you'll find . . . Worldcons include many tracks of programming related to science fiction and fantasy, from science and technical topics (yes really!) to art, literature, history, costuming and prop construction, and predicting future technological and geopolitical trends.

You can meet some really interesting people at them.

Attendees at Worldcons include not only fans but lots of professional writers and even at times actors who are not official guests of honor. Attendees can end up not only meeting people whose work they admire (like at demoparties), but also being witness to (or even participating in conversations) like this one: http://www.steussy.com/blog/2009/08/krugman-and-stross-transcript/ People like the author of a certain well-known book-to-tv-series are loyal attendees of Worldcon after Worldcon, coming to see friends, do business, share ideas, and even relax in a bar. There's a also a Masquerade, usually quite impressive, if you feel the need to gawk at costumes. And an art show.

I've already signed up for programme to talk about the demoscene. I think if they get an influx of demosceners (even though the deadline was March 31st) they'll appreciate the addition to the science programme enough to accept a few. I can help . . . I'm a member of the press relations team. Because it is very hard to say no to Finns. (;

Oh yeah, and here's the website:
worldcon.fi

Hope to see you there! And if not, perhaps the weekend before. (;
I'll be there (as will my fiction, now also in English special for Worldcon).

What kind of demoscene programme have you proposed?

Hiya, glad to hear of another demoscener attending!

I just suggested a programme item about the demoscene's importance in computing and Finland's specific importance in the demoscene, since local content is common at Worldcons. And especially a con introducing folks to a country they may not have visited before.

I didn't know you wrote, that's cool!
I'm going to show up without any productions.

Showing up is worth something. (;
That sounds interesting. I can volunteer to discuss the Finnish scene, if more people are needed.

I've had six novels (and five non-fiction books) published in Finnish, but only the latest one falls under scifi. A short story of mine and some drabbles will be published in English-language anthologies for Worldcon.
