Smode Synth 3D demotool is released for the masses!

category: general [glöplog]

Hey people!
Here is some relief for those frustrated by the inability to save files in the trial version of Notch demotool (formerly Fairlight's DemolitionFX) (discussed here: http://www.pouet.net/topic.php?which=10844).

Go check this one out: http://smode.fr/synth/

Some notes from the tool's FAQ:
Quote:

Are there some limitations to Smode Synth?
Smode Synth has no watermark logo but it’s limited to one HD output. There is also a limit on the video streaming capacity which is limited to a total number of 1920x1080 pixels streamed simultaneously (enables to display either multiple small videos or one full HD video). Apart from this, all real-time compositing and generative content tools making the essence of Smode are there.

Why is Smode Synth free?
We believe that the community of visual artists has a strong role to play to promote the ideas of real-time compositing for digital arts. Since we love our technology, we wanted to share something with this community from which Smode is born and therefore decided to release Smode Synth for free.

So, it’s not a demo version?
Smode Synth is of course a kind of demo for Smode Studio / Smode Station, but we pursue a policy of putting a maximum of features inside it to make it usable on its own for visual artists working on non-commercial projects.

Well... Enjoy the ride! :)
I don't think something is a demotool just because it has pixels :)

plenty of vj tools and media content engines around. it's not the size of the tool that matters, it's what you can do with it that counts. mmmkay

It's born from demoscene (one of the first prods using smode: Run Away by Epidemic) but always has been designed more as a "live demo-making tool" than a standard demotool.

sMode Synth is amazingly feature-packed for a free app. Aside from the ON AIR mode (i.e. switching all processing power to the output window which basically means playing a demo) you can even export video files at 720p: http://smode.fr/doc/features/other/video-export.htm. Pretty cool, eh?
cool

Couldn't get any of the examples to render anything, just black. Am I missing something? They seems to load up fine and the time index starts moving, but I get no output.

@visy
Apparently, sMode doesn't support integrated graphics adapters.
Check your specs: http://smode.fr/doc/quickstart/requirements.htm
This may help too: http://smode.fr/doc/help/troubleshootings/Smode-crash-laptops-with-Intel-graphics.htm

I would love to try it out, but my Laptop iGPU sucks ass...
Btw. What is the reason that integrated Intel GPUs are not working? iGPUs newer than ~2012 should pretty much sufficient I'd say (if the drivers don't suck that is).
