Too much CGI in movies

category: offtopic [glöplog]
I just read this article in the paper:
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1160812/jsp/t2/story_101912.jsp#.V63a4aHhntQ
It's the sentences after the "NOW, CGI SCORES OVER STORYTELLING" headline I'm talking about.

I happen to fully agree with this. It seems to be that if Independence Day 1, 20 yrs back had TWO buildings blowing up, then.... Independence Day 2, today, has to have TWENTY!, because the render farms of today can do that much more physics!!!! , ie. They've actually tailored the storyline around the technology!!! To me, this is unthinkable!!

The medium is the message, eh? Like Marshall McLuhan said?
I'm curious to know what you guys think, because it's you and people like you who did it (well, I don't know how many of you worked on renderers for server farms, but I would assume at least some, and even besides that, even for a demo doing a ton of maths and physics on *one* computer, the point is really essentially the same - you understand what I'm saying....).
It actually makes me kind of glad that I haven't been studying a lot of maths and physics and making party-winning demos, in spite of all of Pouet treating me like shit because of it.... ;-) What choo say? :-)
I don't care.

well... what'd you say if they blew up 20 houses with prop models and compositing which is btw digtial too. i'm sure a prop explosion would look different. talk about that the scale and the physics is what's hard to control to make it look what it's gotta look like.

If you don't want CGI movies, don't watch them. That's it. There are lots of different movie so you may pick the one that siitä your needs. If someone is fine with cgi let them watchcthat.

Indiemovies are quite allright nowadays. Not all of them contain hollywood-blockbuster-cgi

I agree, a few days ago I watched this and it was entirely CGI! Very upsetting!

branch: No, saying "That's it" is NOT it - the way Hollywood is going, there may not be anything *left* for me to watch! (in fact there already isn't). ....The question is not whether to *put* CGI in a movie, or not to, but it taking the place of a story!! - if there was a movie which had a fantastic storyline, which simply *happened to have CGI in it*, ie. it needed it to tell that story - well, obviously nothing like it!!!
Talking of which, I have the feeling that both Jungle Book and BFG were examples of this - just a gut *feeling*, since both of them are *books*, in fact books which were both written before computer graphics existed,....and I didn't see them in the hall when they came. Were they any good?
rudi: I don't know which country you're from, but when you say "indie".... umm.. which language are they in? Could you name a couple? Is there anything on the web I can see?
well, let's for a moment address the issue seriously - yes, a lot of filmmakers overuse CGI. It's a new paintjob for an old c... okay, moment over

Haha yes the computer. I like drink the flower from the shoppe. Then, the CGA happen. Where the bomb? Music, yes yes! It is like the unlimited two from the 90s years. Which I tend to agree, dis. So what IS CGI? Nobody knows...

How about just watch films that don't have "special effects"? They're almost universally and categorically better anyway. This doesn't have much to do with CGI per se. Iow what xernobyl said.

Now that you mention it, in the 90ies I saw a movie where a child character was playing to a text adventure with CGA graphics, does anyone know which movie is that?
