Didn't Gargaj talk about a more flexible homepage layout anyway? If so, I'm all for hiding the BBS and oneliner for people that are not logged in, and putting the prod lists front and center. Big, with screenshots :)

I haven't started working on it just yet, but if you check the front page code you can see it's relatively easily serializable, so yeah, it's definitely in the plans.

and then we can also ditch the horrible blue! ;)

That still doesn't solve the logged-out issue though - there's always a default layout.

improvement : what about adding small url, code and image button in "post reply" windows ?. the idea is not to make a full featured editor (not what we need). i am just tired to always have to type url, code and image tags while 99.9% websites have this...

no need of a WYSIWYG editor, selecting text and pushing button will just automatically add tags around it.

Write a d̶e̶m̶o̶ GreaseMonkey about it! ;)
well, default should be just as proposed: more focus on the demos, lesser the community stuff. this does mean the whole design of the front page needs to be remixed as hell. i had my ideas on that (waves to mog and faint drunk memories of a talk at evoke) but, if there are ppl on pouet with true backgrounds in webdesign/usability .. this is something that needs to be looked into. (e.g. check out http://www.wikipediaredefined.com/ how "deep" such an overhaul should go)

That may or may not be true, but I was the first guy to propose a design update to the relaunched Nectarine (the Demovibes platform-based one) because I thought something better could be done than the "Original Theme" (as it is now called). I think now I could do better than that, but people like it so it's still there, among other choices. However the most common request was to make it look like the older Nectarine! I've written two themes now that were based on screenshots or Internet Archive links given to me. There's even one person I know of who still uses the "Original Theme" I intended to replace.

You can update the styling all you want and make it new, hip, etc, but just remember that there's always going to be some who would rather have the old stuff back for nostalgia reasons or because that's just what the site is for them.

I don't think a complete overhaul is necessarily going to be a good thing / workable in application. In theory it might sound nice, but unless you're fixing some really obvious usability problems that affect a lot of people already, it's probably not worth it (and could you do those anyway with the existing design?)
it's not about styling. it's about rearranging its content. it's fucking retarded that the front page 'main content' is the oneliner and bbs. that's what pouet is all about? imho no. as a pouet regular, i wanna a) search a demo, b) check new demos, c) comment or check comments on demos. that should be central.

you should see new demos, nice screenshots. new comments. etc. plenty of web2.0 websites to steal ideas from when it comes to showing off artworks/products etc in a sensible fashion. im no expert in that, but surely demos + screenshots is a nice way to go.

the community stuff is nice and all if you're a regular/scener as well. whether you like the noise or not. making that login only would work. for the outside world. it's distracting, unneccesary. if they wanna sign up and stuff, ok. then they're also ready for the crap they can face. for the outside world, the only subjective shit they can come across are the comments. and well, youtube etc have comments too, i've seen horrible comments under the most beautiful videos, so i'm sure outsiders get it that subjective comments can be.. subjective!

maali, you will like demozoo then =)
added on the 2013-08-30 22:57:40 by dipswitch dipswitch
yeah well. based what i've heard about demozoo... demozoo will never work cos pouet already has the audience and why not tweak pouet around with the aforementioned things instead of putting a whole different website with 'parallel administration' next to it?
added on the 2013-08-30 23:04:52 by maali maali
because demozoo is not there to replace pouet, but to make something different. but let's not get offtopic.

what i saw of it in the seminar, it looks like a horrible csdb+wiki clone. so not convinced. but yeah different topic ;)

I almost hate to say it, but.. no.

For me, demoscene is 1/3 demos, 2/3 the community. So the community parts should most definitely still be central. But considering what the community is like, maybe not central if you're not logged in. Maybe hidden in that case. And I like this "new stuff with big screenshots" idea, can we have that central too?

Maybe it needs 2 columns, instead of the current 'central, then unimportant stuff at the sides'? Demos on the left, latest released top, recently added (but not released so it's not duplicated*) second, charts third. On the right, oneliner, bbs, recent comments. This column doesn't happen if you're not logged in.

* That's probably a good one for that never-ending to-do list.. looking just now, the 'latest added' and 'latest released' lists on the front page are 70% identical. And why isn't 'latest released' up top anyway?

linky :D

Warning, this does a bit more than it says on the tin. If you're not happy with that, don't use it. More specifically, it adds a bold "by" line to the automatic quote blocks generated by the post-footer quote links. This feature will get removed in the future if the site ever supports this features itself, as the site could do it by user ID so the username is always up to date, whereas I can't.

Features:

  • when clicking the button without any text selected it auto-generates a default bb-code with the sample text selected so it can be quickly replaced
  • when using the "link with extra text" button if the selected text appears to be a valid URL, it will insert it in the attribute slot and generate selected sample text for the contents
  • if the selected text does not appear to be a URL it will auto-generate a sample URL and select it, leaving the previously selected text as the value
  • auto-generates lists from selected text by converting all text separated by a newline into a list item
  • in theory phone friendly due to the selection of inserted sample text so you can immediately type what you want to replace it

Caveats:
I don't recommend using the auto-list feature on selected text that already has a list in it. If you select text with newlines added after creating the initial list that would work, but Pouet doesn't support nested lists. Your output will be broken.

Requires IE9+ or pretty much any other browser. I only tested it in Firefox, but I think I may have tested my own code I borrowed in other browsers.

Credits and licenses:

  • the images are from the FamFamFam Silk icon set
  • some of the editor code is code borrowed from one of my non-public as-yet unreleased probably-dead web-based music competition site platform which I hadn't set a license on yet, but I don't see why this script (including the stuff I borrowed) shouldn't Public Domain and/or free to use, change, remix, edit, or anything else allowed by law

Final notes:
If you install this script off my server (instead of downloading it and then loading it somehow), GreaseMonkey should keep this script up to date by downloading new copies as they go up as long as they have a newer version number. It shouldn't update very often in any case, as it's not very complex.

Enjoy!
I stink. What's the point of pointing out other browsers if GreaseMonkey is a Firefox add-on? Anyway, if they didn't remove it in 15, Opera had the ability to run user scripts too. The script linked above should work there as well. I think I heard some rumbling of some other browser getting user script support, but I don't remember which or know what the compatibility would be.
I did look briefly in to a "contenteditable" version (editing the output of HTML that you see) but it would be hard to make it work the same as the bb-code interpretation. Pouet turns line breaks in to <br> tags (yuck) whereas Firefox auto-creates paragraph tags for that. Firefox does auto-create or auto-remove list items though, which is cool, but Firefox doesn't allow for insertion of extra lines between list items.

Anyway, doing it this way would be fighting the browser (or browsers if they're different in their implementations). Still probably be easier than creating a full WYSIWTF editor by hand, though. The end result needs to be bb-code, so either as input changes or before submit the hidden new reply textarea would have to be updated based on the HTML.

but hey, the button toobar option works, so I think I'll just stick to maintaining that. :)

(If someone was able to write this, it would negate the need for the preview button. However there would probably be people who would want direct input anyway.)
chrome runs user scripts just fine, and there are loads of wysiwyg editors that output bbcode.
