pouet 2.0 migration: aug 14

category: general [glöplog]
So yeah, we continued to work on it and we've reached the state where it is now ready for the champagne bottle. We'll pull the current Pouet down for migration on Wednesday, August 14, 18:00 CEST, and continue converting the database - it should take an hour or two depending on how fast the db is. When it comes back it'll be the all new db and code and all that, and hopefully only a small percent of you will want to line up in front of my house with pitchforks afterwards.

The codebase we'll be deploying is available at https://github.com/pouetnet/pouet2.0/ in case you want to poke around. Note that we're featurefrozen so please don't line up with "oh it would be so cool" - thx.

Couple of things that changed or to be expected:
- Full unicode compatibility. (Yes, you'll be able to post both poop and zalgo in the oneliner, for better or for worse.)
- A bunch of fun little JS upgrades to help adding stuff. (e.g. autocomplete) - the site does gracefully fall back if you prefer not to have JS.
- The existing unicode posts (or prods) will, in theory, be preserved and will display correctly.
- The "boards"/"lists" feature is incomplete but will be completed after migration.
- The FAQ will get updated with some of the new things.
And probably a few things I forget now.

Hopefully there'll be no complications and it'll be worth the 5(?) year wait.

[17:26:03] <dfox> you know that you'll be killing the demoscene if the migration does fail and you forget to make backups :D
[17:26:14] <dfox> (no pressure)

Great. So that means we will be able to type Japanese characters and need no longer resort to embedding images in the Random Japanese Thread! (*^o^*)

Köszönöm szépen!

Just keep in mind that at launch there won't that much innovation visible to the eye (pretty much only the things that Gargaj already mentioned).

However, new codebase and reworked database will make adding new features a bit easier, hopefully. :)

phoenix: he already did by forcing a license on code he didn't even write.
And moreover.....

Added GPLv3 to protect the code and the name

BSD 3-clause does the latter too, but is less restrictive than GPL.

Just to make sure that we don't get a pouet.net ripoff in the future

Yeah riiiiiight....

Have you ever had a look on the old pouet code?
It's worse than what we used to call "Kahlscher Code" or "Eisenbahncode" in my old company...
You don't really want to keep that ^^
