1400 / 500 / 200 eur for open demo compo (1st, 2nd and 3rd).

Good opportunity to get some cash since there'll probably not be many releases :)

well there'll be an ASD release! :P
but even for 500 euro you can still buy half of spain

Debvgger 2KB intro apparently was disqualified by some people who 2 hours before the voting didn't even know what demoscene/intros/demos were and never heard sids/mods/... Come on wtf?

doh! I guess it wasn't disqualified after all! xD I'm glad about it! anyway selected jury had some sense when it was formed by individuals with demoscene experience or at least contact, I think it would make more sense to open the voting to all people coming to the party and perform voting after playing democompo videos.

The demo took revenge for that attempt, Crumb :-) I'll use the prize money for dev stuff (looking forward SD card floppy emulators for Amiga and C64) and next year I promise there will be a decent intro and demo from me.

Many thanks for the printed Amiga docs you gave me :-)

The party was good (considering we were surrounded by hordes of gamers). Our row (with people doing creative things and some of them even using obsolete computers) was undoubtly the better in the partyplace. Like a demoparty inside a lan-party.

But the noise was too much to code or make music. We (debvgger and I) avoided all the crazyness with a convenient hotel reservation just to code in calm.

Some people (the people in Spontz and Bixo) were present but they did not bring new releases. A pity.

The return of mr.doob to the compo was a nice surprise. He came with a nice javascript demo although he was caught by the unreasonable early deadline.

My demo (well, the compo version, still I need to do a final) was finished in the hotel. All debvgger' stuff was done in a hurry there.
Hotel-coding rules! He learned how to use crinkler and clinkster in just a few hours during the creation of his 3K intro.

Overall, everything was good. The worst part were the oddities of the organization. For instance, they didn't adjust the projector to support all the expected resolutions. Everything in 4:3 aspect ratio was streched to 16:9 when they could have been fixed it simply adjusting an option in some menu.

After the demo compos I saw how they adjusted something in 4:3. WTF!? Seems that the people that know how to manage the projection machine were absent during the democompos (and the game coding compo) but not during the game compos and crazy youtube shows afterwards.

mrdoob: Birra and me weren't notified about any demo, no choice was given. I even had you to my right but I didn't know you were going to join the compo. Most of the jury didn't have a clue about demos nor deadlines.

Perhaps you should point your finger to the scene organizer who decided not to extend the deadline.

The jury idea made some sense when people with scene experience was chosen but choosing people with no scene contact makes no sense for me. Demos should be judged after being shown to public, not before. Ridiculous if you ask me, I already complained with the game compo because we had to look for the coders of the games that were developed on non-wintel platforms and a few hours later the coder showed the game himself. Now it would make more sense to use webpage to vote, most of people don't know what demoscene is but neither does the jury and most of people wouldn't spend time voting democompos anyway. As soon as any production is shown it should be made available on the ftp.

Since Blooddrinker left we have not been allowed to show demos in the big screen. After a pair of years asking Yawin, this one he promised some place and also main projector time but I doubt he was ever commited to do it. As you shaw we were fired from an unused place in the corridors despiting we were supposedly "allowed" by main scene organizer.

Yup. The guy that turned off the sound in our nice private demoshow had some serious lack of social skills.

Don't worry about the demo being disqualified. I was the one that suggested to disqualify it as all I wanted was to see it in the demoshow... That was the solution I came up with after they gave me none. They kept repeating to me that I was late and the voting had been done already.

And yes, the voting should be done after the demoshow to allow the tradition of delivering 5min before the demoshow starts :P

But you know... considering they're still organising demoscene compos even if 99.9% of the people are playing games... I can't really complain.

Couldn't agree more, also after reading the stories Euskal doesn't seem something I'd love to attend. Kinda sad :\

I was invited to take part in the jury last year, and to be honest, it was a bit of a WTF experience. We were divided into groups of 2-3 people based on speciality - music, graphics, code - and sent off to separate places to judge each aspect in isolation. I was in the music/audio group, so I had to give ratings from 1 to 10 for melody, sound quality and so on.

There were massive omissions in what was being judged - I seem to remember that in the game dev compo, there was no point at which any member of the jury actually considered *gameplay*. I don't know what happened to the votes after we finished, but I really, really hope there was more to it than 'add up all the votes in each category, divide by ten, boom, final rankings'.

Maybe the language barrier gave me a particularly bad view of it and made it seem more disorganised than it was, but it all felt like "going through the motions", lacking someone in charge who was really passionate about the scene and prepared to honour the work that had gone into the entries.

I don't get why they don't open the voting to everyone. With 4000 it should be complicated to have that many friends for namevoting, no? Even if 99% doesn't give a shit that still leaves 40 voters.

I understand all of the complaints you have. And honestly, attempt to improve gradually. But, as Mr. Doob said, is a party in which 99% of the participants are only interested in playing.

With the budget they give me, I can't bring scener jury worldwide. Even I have to cut the awards every year.

The disqualified demo is a sad result. Honestly, it was my favorite. But the jury had assessed and the deadline is for something.

For next year I will continue trying to improve things.

-------------------------------------------------------

1% of 4000 is still 40, which is a pretty good number.
