Crowdfunding parties

category: parties [glöplog]
@gargaj,
as few times mentioned, i'm speaking from my personal point of view. I understand that you're speaking as a organiser, but also as a someone who use those streams very rare or never.

so, maybe i'm wrong, or maybe, just maybe, I'm right.

I always believe that if there is no consensus, best test is to test it in real life. make a stream PPV and examine the results.

as for "every single euro helps", make a enough t-shirts for next Function, so that the latecomers can get them also. ;)))) also, make a call for a donations on a big screen between the compos, and put the donation jar somewhere accessible (e.g. close to the bar ;) ).

as goes for a generation that watch demos on the youtube, this is a totally different topic, so I wouldn't go there for the sake of the argument. but yes, if any of the current 730 videos that Anni(kras) uploaded to youtube, generate just one new scener, I would call that a win.

sunspire: i'd say there *are* benefits. Things like having multiple ticket levels - standard, supporter ticket, ticket + t-shirt (knowing numbers upfront helps here ;), VIP ticket with included beer,... And having the option to send some money without buying a ticket. And the transparency of seeing immediately how close the party is to being funded, or how close it is to having a free 24 hour bar.

Sure, you can do that OK without the crowdfunding site, and maybe none of that is worth the extra money spent on fees - I'd say that depends on the party and the orgas.

It'd be very interesting to know how well it works if a party goes that route though, and seriously uses all the extra stuff that comes with the crowdfunding option. If it does turn out to be worthwhile, it'd be worth looking at some kind of demoparty-specific funding site, no? Then we get the benefits without so much of the fees.

I'd be in for a booze included ticket.

see problem i see in different payment tiers is that you are basically sorting the sceners by their wallet (which is in my opinion even worse than sorting them by scenepoints). i dont want to sit on a wooden bench in a freezing tent because the main hall is reserved for 100 euro tickets and up (drastically spoken, of course).

Halls are overrated. The real party is outside anyways. Maybe not around this time this year....

I know not everybody decides until last minute if they're coming or not, but certainly once I've decided I'm coming to a party, I'll book my flights and hotel as early as possible to get the best price. At that point, I'm committed to coming to the party, so paying in advance for the party wouldn't be a major hurdle especially if the organisers are cash-strapped.

Perhaps not directly related, but I can bring up something we did for Solskogen this year. As some might now, we had to change locations and our new location is significantly more expensive to rent. So, we added an option to the ticket ordering (see how effortlessly I plugged that? :) where people can donate whatever amount they feel like. If they do, they'll be presented with three options on the next page: 1) I don't need anything in return and want to remain anonymous, 2) Help me promote my product/service! or 3) During the event, do something cool to cater to my ego!

So far, we've gotten donations of 1000,- NOK this way, which goes _A LONG WAY_ to cover our extra expenses and it just warms my heart that people care about our party enough to do so.

With regards to the original premise of crowdfunding in advance, I think D.Fox touched most of the downsides of that already.

Now - CrowdFONDUING on the other hand? I want in on THAT bucket'o'cheese.

I had to stay home from Revision this year, so I was grateful for the stream. I gladly donated what I consider a fair amount. I don't think PPV is feasible because, as D.Fox says, I would demand higher QoS and thus more hassle

Well, at least our donation experiment worked out alright. I think that's a reasonable course of action for the future as well.

A random idea:

Option to do a kind of donation with the difference that it's granted back / spent on another party at donor's discretion instead of being used for prizemoney.

This means that it can be used to add more party features in advance (budget plans are usually conservative, remember the two last breakpoints?) and can also be used for expenses that arise after the party (damages etc.). Plus anyone who's done this kind of "donation" would have an increased interest in the party place not being damaged :D

@D.Fox: happy to hear that donations worked.

Over the 5+ years (damn!) that SceneSat has existed, we (as a collective) have probably spent upwards of tens of thousands of Euros on hardware, software, travel and miscellaneous other outlays.

I don't have the figures right here, but I'd wager that donations during that time have not exceeded 1000 EUR.

We still do it, because getting paid is not why we're here, but we'd sure appreciate some help when the bills roll in.

Which is why the Revision donation experiment was a fantastic idea in my opinion.

All hail to the SceneSat!
too bad paypal is idiots and refuses my money.. (as they refuses the "e-kort" or e-card electronic VISA card I use to pay stuff on the net) or I could donate more to scenesat etc.

guess I have to hand some money to ziphoid next time I meet him instead. :)

The problem with funding a party in any other way than by just selling tickets is that it makes you responsible towards other entities than your visitors, whether that may be PPV customers, sponsors or someone else. Ofcourse you can choose yourself how responsible you will actually be, but there's always a risk that something goes awry and your funding disappears. If you feel the risk is worth it, go right ahead and make it happen, I'll be the first to applaud you if your scheme works out as desired. Me personally though, I just care about being able to organise a nice party for those people who actually show up at the venue for many years to come (sign up here and buy your ticket here).
