To my Mind: fly to frankfurt/hahn and seek for others that do the same, to take the train with them :) That should be not the easiest way, but the cheapest imho.

Best: Fly to Frankfurt/Main (FRA) and do the same from there. But travelling from there is way much easier... and you can possibly find some others that pick you up, that go there by the car... all the people from east germany and most of the north german guys should drive by that airport
(ppl, take the A5 (here is the airport), A67, A6... thats a way better autobahn, not that 2 row crap from mainz (is that A63?) that your navigation software proposes)

Funny Fact, "Main" is the Name of a River, but that Airport is the main airport, too :D

If you're somewhere near London, the train works pretty well, although you may find that the price has rocketed up now that it's only a couple of weeks away...

Quote:
+1 to doing London-Saarbrucken by train... even without my tree-hugger hat on, it does make sense. Eurostar to Paris, 10 minute walk to Gare De L'Est, TGV to Saarbrucken. About 6 hours in all, less annoying security at check-in, all the luggage you can carry, and avoiding the faff of getting to an airport in the middle of nowhere.

Expect it to be about £150-200 return for Easter weekend... not the cheapest, but probably not far off once you add up all the hidden charges.

nytrik: haha, im trying to deal with the same issue right now. everything is expensive due to the lateness of the booking. :)

Smash , I would be interested to have your views on that :)

Smash/Nytrik: There is a hardcore option - try one of the Polish international busses departing daily from Victoria Station. Try Polonia Travel or something like that. Tickets are relatively cheap and the bus is travelling through Channel, Belgium, Holland, Germany and so on. On the way back try Lufthansa as usual :)

Also say hi to www.skyscanner.com

Gasman's option is the best - If only I was in London, there would be no other way of getting to the party than train :)

nytrik: options are :
- eurostar + 2 hr tgv to saarbrucken .. eurostar is fucking expensive now tho cos its late and its easter. like £200 per person each way ..
- flight to frankfurt main, 2 and a half hour train to saarbrucken. i did it last year. flights are quite expensive by now. trains are reasonably regular but slooow.
- ryanair flight to frankfurt hahn, train. are there even trains to saarbrucken direct from hahn?
- curveball option: flight to paris, tgv to saar. i list it because a cheap flight to paris can be a lot cheaper than the eurostar.
- fly via luxemburg to saar.

(these being realistic options for old men who dont want to take a 12 hour bus or something)
added on the 2013-03-13 12:34:23 by smash smash
12 hour bus with sceners++ and beer++
Regular train with "common people" and no beer

But yeah, I perfectly understand the "old men" situation :)

C'mon guys, where's the spirit? Flights between LON-FRA are about £250-300 return now. You could join us on Lufthansa's EDI-FRA on Friday for much more reasonable cost and then get back to LON on Monday. Just an option.

Naively I had an other original idea in Mind :

-Bus from london to dover
-ferry from dover to Calais
-rent a car from Calais to saarbrucken

Nytrik, there was a guys travelling from Edinburgh to Saarbrucken by car last year. They wewre planning to doi it this year, too. Try one of the Sundown's threads about the travelling. I was coming back with them from Sundown last year - very nice chaps.

I ended up getting train tickets from Ashford to Saarbrucken, which cost me about £320 in the end. Not sure how much cheaper it would be for London to Saarbrucken, I'd imagine that would be about £300.

I booked through bahn.com. It was a few weeks ago now, so prices may have changed. Also, I had to phone them as the online booking was all over the place due to Easter weekend. This is a test run for me, but hopefully it will be less hassle than flying.

I did also consider travelling by car as I live in Dover, but that would probably end up quite a bit more expensive when you factor in the ferry and petrol.

Smash,

If you want to share a car ride with the three of us, heading from Cambridge to Saarbrucken, you'll be more than welcome to. We'll be heading out on Maundy Thursday (28th March), probably getting the midmorning Eurotunnel crossing. We plan to leave on April 1st (Monday)

We also have a spare bed in a twin room at the Ibis hotel, sharing with CiH. This is still available.

Providing you're prepared to pay your fair share and maybe could meet us in Cambridge before we leave. The car we'll be travelling in is a Corsa, but it is the best we have I'm afraid.

Hope this helps.

If I wasn't going early to help organise, I'd offer a seat in my car.

Therefore, this post is of no use. Mwah hah hah.

I found a good deal :
Eurostar on 29/03 : leaving at 5H40 for £99
Paris -Saarbrucken : 74 euros...

about the same for the return

nytrik: in the end im flying to luxembourg on BA, was about £200 return and takes 1 hr. bus from luxembourg to saarbrucken takes 1 hr 10 and costs 14e each way.
partly im doing this because its cheap(ish), partly because its fast, partly because i quite fancy seeing what luxembourg is like (its small, so a brief visit should do), and partly because i want to pump up my british airways points. :) the old man rule states: the route that involves an airport executive lounge is the correct one.

thanks everybody for their offers of cars and help tho :)
