Scene.org Awards discontinued

category: general [glöplog]
Maali: I would like to see a jury consisting of past winners rather than a self chosen few. Hard to do first time around I have to admit. But if there will be some kind of an award in the future that's the format I would like to see. Or maybe a combination of the two.

except that many (active!) past winners usually also are nominees in the "current year" edition of the awards, thus making their contribution to the voting process complex then. (cant vote their own stuff, questionable objectivity for outsiders, etc) take for example smash, i think he left the jury for being omnipresent in the categories ages ago already :)

Holy shucks, that's crazy!

Why?

Ask 5 different people and you get 5 different answers, I guess.

Hi,

Sad to read these news, but it's understandable and nothing lasts forever. Yet again the scene is mutating, which I think is as good a sign it's still alive as any. I'm sure people felt that the scene was dying when e.g. The Party, M&S or even more recently Breakpoint hit the grave, but in reality it just changed a little. I am sure that will be the case also this time.

at some point someone correllate the "this is sad/this sucks" posts against the posts here. gems like,

FUCK THE AWARDS. They are useless and pointless. Just a bunch of 1337 sceners jerking on their own egomania.

personally im amazed and grateful they stuck it out as long as they did.

the awards was invaluable as a one of the major pieces of recognition for actual quality in the demoscene - especially one judged by an unbiased knowledgeable group of peers away from the party viewing experience after the dust has settled.

i know numerous non-scene or vaguely interested friends who's entire view of the demoscene's year came from catching the breakpoint releases, the assembly releases and the scene.org award nominees. as the number of quality releases has declined, it became even more important to gather and recognise the nuggets of good stuff from the year - even if perhaps the resulting show became less paletable.

for me this is a big nail in the coffin of the demoscene's life as an interesting, productive, relevant entity. a step another bit closer to the last remenants of quality in the demoscene finally sinking below the tide mark of nostalgic / gimmicky / obscure / joke shit.

still,

These are saddening, but somewhat expected news. Thumbs up to everyone who made them happen during all the years. And pretty much what velo and smash said.
This is a very sad news to me. I loved attending to the ceremony every year. And as Smash said, many people have a view of the demoscene through the scene.org award nominees.

Thanks for all your hard work guys!

smash: While I understand and also partially agree with your sentiment, I think you are being overly pessimistic. To the contrary, I think the scene needs to continue reinventing itself if we're to avoid becoming an inbred nostalgia club. The Scene.org awards were a relatively recent institution in the larger scope of things, and even so the world has changed since they started out. Maybe something else will emerge to fill the gap, perhaps in a different way. I don't know; I just think it's possible to be a bit more cheerful about what we're doing and how things are going.

I'm not so sure on that. Over the past years we've had a really good increase in quality (which you've contributed a whole lot to :) But maybe that simply isn't sustainable, and we need a new direction.

The number of people with the skills to compete at the "big demo production" level is small, the number of people with the motivation and free time even less. We've seen a period where the top is dominated by a few major groups, and I think we're seeing less releases from those groups.. hence the decline in quality. Well, not quality as such, but fewer high quality releases, less top demos each year. Maybe I'm wrong here, this is subjective :)

I think there's plenty of room at the bottom though. Higher quality small releases, one effect demos or short pieces, where there's more room for wild experimentation that doesn't have to fit a theme or story, that kind of thing.

newsflash. we already are an inbred nostalgia club. the kids of these days have other "scenes" to be creative. no need to reinvent ourselves, we're being replaced ;P

smash: over more than the last few years :) I mean, at one point the product was stunning - but compare it to anything recent.

We've come a long way, and I think the skill level has increased hugely and also the effort people put into demos has increased a lot. Maybe it's the effort that's on the wane as we're working more and spending more time with families?

Yeah I know, it's incredibly comfortable to just let go and be a pessimist. I've seen it before in other communities; after a while it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and eventually you get to say "See, I told you so". And then you have won! \o/

Agreeing with Saga, it's sad to see this event being a thing of the past now. For me it was a nice way to root for my most loved demos and groups, hoping to get everyone to vote for ctrl+alt+test and their d-four, for instance.
Sure it was sometimes cheesy, and kinda obvious who won what - but hey, that's the thing with charts - though it felt cool to take part by voting. A bit like the Eurovision Songcontest - where you sometimes facepalm, but then comes Lordie and you actually start to make phonecalls ^^

Thanks to all the people who took part, brought us this event - it'll be surely missed. Really wonder what netpouet is doing with that scene.org tuxedo now though :)

i'll say this - I still have the candidate voting system for the scene.org awards in pouet, so we could make a Pouet Awards where it's the Poueteers voting instead of the nordic conspiracy.

i mean i cant really come up with any awards apart from making new icons, but it's an option.

There should definitely be some kind of replacement. If nothing else, it's cool just to get a reminder of the great things people made in the last year, and for those people to get reminded of how great they are :)

Sounds good to me, at least as a first start. Possibly do it in two rounds as in the years before (first, let the crowd gather candidates, and then let people vote for them). If the sceners and the Revision orgas in particular are interested in it, one could even present the results at Revision, just like the old awards. And then we can see how things evolve.
Oh Gargaj! If I can be of any help let me know, idea sounds really cool :)

I wasn't thinking anything that big, the scene.org awards made sense to have a ceremony because it had physical prizes, but for pouet i dont think it'd warrant a lot more attention than bbs posts and icons on the prod pages

That said, I could probably print diplomas though.
