"Go to Pouet, but not to the BBS"

category: offtopic [glöplog]
why not? judging by your pouet posts, you seem to have an unlimited supply of bladibla ;)

maali, la vache qui rit!

Also, I type fast. And you definitely comment more than me.

As to the question . . . I might be derailing the topic, but a fast answer:
I'd love to do it, but not on my own. A group blog or something maybe. Not some thing where I'd be the editor fixing everything. I did that in another subculture sphere once already. Thank you very much, I've burned out that way before.

Anyway, back to THE SUBJECT OF THIS THREAD, aka Pouet, aka scene social hubs and info repositories, if this thread gets more than the 10% off their asses doing stuff, great!

The way forward for the scene is more people doing stuff and new generations of folks getting involved.

Which means being welcoming and constructive.

I've offered to do what I can do. I've said what I have to say. I don't have anything more to say about this skeletonized horse, thank you.
^^^ this.

I don't really buy this idea that there's a silent faction of people waiting for things to be open-sourced, or APIs to be built, or databases to be opened up, before they start building awesome stuff - but if there are: don't. Just go ahead and build it, dammit. From what I've experienced, all of the Usual Suspects Who Build All The Websites are really keen to co-operate, whether that's sharing data, advice on database schemas, or whatever. (I just wish there were enough hours in the day to implement all of this data-sharing stuff here and now...) Just because it isn't open-source doesn't mean it's a private clique.

Exactly. And in the midst of this tedious discussion, I've used the power of gargaj and built a random-demo-playlist-generator.

How did this happen?
12:00 Had the idea during a chat with ziphoid
15:23 Talked to gargaj
15:31 Got the exported data
20:30 Started fiddling with the data
21:50 Rollout

Doing tops talking :) You've just been served!

Got it in 1. If I talk about pouet I tend to lump it in the same boat as sites like b3ta or zgeek - "put your thick skin on and leave your faint heart behind" types.

Generally there is a positive slant to pouet, shit-stirring yes but not usually really negative.
Unfortunately it's those real nasty bits that mean I don't generally send people pouet's way.

Many forums have a way of identifying n00bs that usually leads to them being welcomed and introduced to the 'gang'. B3ta's "L" plates for instance. Maybe this could be implemented as a new users 1st avatar for a week or so - that seems on most other forums I've been to allow them to introduce themselves and let's the stalwarts know to go easy on them and any silly questions that may arise.

My 2c.

when's the last time you read an extensive demo review blog? it's near-zero effort to set up, all it would need is a fucking wordpress, really, and boom, you can be the next demoo/monostep/ths/thetunnel. if we go back to the asm compostudio, there were a couple of points where there was actual profound discussion about what people liked or disliked in certain demos - certainly those people wouldnt mind occasionally writing it down? and certainly, reading something like that would be more fascinating for a newcomer than the largely single-syllable comments galore that is pouet?

given the overall lack of solid work being put into the primary function of this scene - i.e. making demos - these days, evident both from the low number of releases and the overall quality, i wouldnt have much faith in new community support initiatives (review websites etc) working out - and nor do i think it should be the primary target for the few who do have the motivation to put in that work.

watching the asm compostudio just made me think how many people seem to have great ideas about what it takes to make a good demo that it's disappointing they dont turn their hand to actually implementing them - with a few exceptions of course.

Seconded.

smash: if I'd be a good enough graphics artist or -coder i'd do just that. But I'm sticking to what I can do - so, parties and portals it is ;-)

Watching this yesterday (it's a video about community "gardening") I was reminded of the scene

here's an idea: start a kickstarter fundraise for pouet2.0 and outsource the development to India.

I disagree with both Jcl & gloom - D.Fox definitely has the leading.

ringofyre: you disagree with what exactly? I'm quite sure Smash didn't mean that people who build websites should _stop_ doing that as well.
added on the 2012-08-21 11:50:09 by gloom gloom
Perhaps we should make a demo about it!

I was gonna write kind of the same point as smash did (although from a slightly different angle). The small free time i get outside of work, kids, etc goes to helping organize a party and trying to get some prods done, so spending time on websites, etc isn't something i have time for or think should be a priority.

That said, running a blogsite, etc doesn't need any tech skills anymore so maybe it'd be time for blogmags?

D.Fox: I've heard rumours that you're branching out to coding "real" stuff nowadays ;)

No offense really, but there's a big difference between a 20 LOC PHP snippet to cook up that feature and the fully featured website that is being discussed here. :)

Oh, and as far as I'm aware, there are a few blogs that talk about scene releases in depth, it's just that nobody reads them. So, that is that.

tomaes: it's not the amount of code that makes a product, it's the idea

The point that I wanted to make was: stop talking, start doing

@gloom - apart from D.Fox who (including you, me & smash) has done anything (albeit not really relevant) to deal with the issues presented in this thread?
Hence - D.Fox is doing. Action speaks louder & all that jazz.

Which shouldn't mean that you do stuff without first having a goal and idea or some kind of a plan. That should come first of course ;)

Talking is good as well - but not with too many people who have too different opinions.

I'm sure that many of the naysayers here would never be interested in helping our with the work that should/need be done on the current portal situation. If we only include people who really want to do stuff, this would be a much more productive discussion.
