POUNDS-OFF: The demoscene weight-loss platform for the lardy!

category: offtopic [glöplog]
...sychronicity strikes, since the TRSAC party room is basically an aerobic room xD
So, get in gear, people

In terms of motivation, I guess that a way to thumb up others activities would be nice :)

Is that a new category idea for Pouet2? :)

Actually I was stunned again about the almost cartellish appearing capabilities of the scene when it comes to pull up something.
Imagine this would be a standard weight-loss-community. They would debate for ages about a website and end up with some outdated crap 2 years after the inital thought.
Here, a buch of big fellas have a funny idea while chatting and *puff* up goes the website with all the doo-dads you need.

I'm not sure about the social dynamic implications of thumb-upping, but I agree that we need ways to interact and encourage each other.

Two other ideas:

A small ceremony at parties where people who set weight goals for that party (and achieve them) could be publically recognized, and get a small token or diploma. Might be a motivator for some, optional for others.

T-shirt unlocking. "I lost X kilograms with POUNDS-OFF.ME", in 5(?) kg increments. People would have to pay for the t-shirts of course.

Salinga: Just a question, did you ever try to lose weight? At least to me (and, from what I can see, others here) it really doesn't go in 1kg jumps.

Especially not when you get off those first 3-4 kg's and your body starts adjusting. It really goes a few hundred grams each day, but it DOES go steady downwards as a trend. Seeing that every day trend has been highly motivational for me (not to mention being able to adjust instantly if I started going off track)..

I like this idea - some have mentioned that endomondo already has this, and that's as may be .. it doesn't mean we can't also have it. The main thing about this site is - I think - to have a place where you can commit yourself, to help with motivation :) It's much harder to quit a diet or an exercise scheme, when the whole world is watching :)

Of course there are dozens of other sites that do things better than this quick hack - but are they as fun as ours? Also - it doesn't hurt to enter your activities at other places as well. Important is that people stay motivated.

I like thumbs - but only in the facebook manner - so no thumbing down - that might be discouraging. Maybe commenting on the users profile is a good place to start. We don't have to recode facebook just yet :)

decades from now, historians will refer to this project as "an unexpected shift of focus in the demoscene" :P

We are already thinking about a bit of stage time during the next parties to praise/scold the participants :)

That's a good idea. Maybe the parties or associations can all throw some money in a pot so the people don't have to buy the shirts but are "awarded".

I started to training one year a go. A lot of swimming, running and gym. And cause I like numbers I bought my self a body composition monitor. And started to put my numbers up.

I lost maybe 3 kilos before I started to track numbers, but here is my stats for ~7 months.

TIP: Long runs are nice place to think ideas for your next demo.

I would like to chime to support this great initiative, however I won't join since I've already made the trip myself but I'll post a few pictures to, perhaps, serve as motivation for some of you.

A couple of you might recognize me from what I used to look like. Here's me from Symphony 2003:

Breakpoint 2005:

And me at my absolute worst (late 2008), by then I was at around 150 kg:

Then I started shaking off my weight summer 2009 and in a little over a year I made it down to 77 kg, and here's a picture of me (late summer 2010):

It's been two years now and I've kept my weight pretty steady since then, and I've never been healthier…
