French Electro - Retro Scene Sound

category: music [glöplog]
I'm not sure how well known this music scene is to everyone on here, but I thought I'd bring it to your attention as I think a lot of older demosceners will really appreciate it...and maybe some composers would consider getting involved. It was known mainly as French Electro, but has expanded to include artists from all over the world.

Basically, it's a new wave of music with influences from old 80s and early 90s synthesizer tracks and as you'll all notice, a very similar sound to that classic demo scene sound. The genre has been getting more popular now since Kavinsky and College composed soundtracks for the movie Drive, but here are some of my personal favourites...

I can imagine a lot of classic demoscene tunes fitting right into this genre.

Anyway, hope you enjoy this stuff as much as I do.

At least in the actual 90s people knew how to do beats without sidechaining the whole mix to death. Sorry, this might very well work at club volume but with my good headphones I can't fucking stand it for more than a minute.

No idea what sidechaining is, I just know I really love this genre and some of these tracks conjure such fond nostalgic memories. But I would be just as happy hearing some older scene music remixed and played in clubs.

okkie: Same thing, sadly. Every kick makes even the vocals disappear for a fraction of a second. Sidechaining just the bass and pads would be completely ok, but essentially turning off the whole song every beat? Nope, sorry.

That Rapture song is extremely badly sidechained - as KB mentions the vocals sounds broken... geez!

Nobody dared to say that the demoscener could have ripped ideas from the "pop/real/common" scenes? Come on naives :)))
Also, a lot of sceners tend to think simple waveforms use in music making comes from the scene... while it comes from early synthesizing.

Oh well, scene legends ;)

word

except for Danger who claims to be from the amiga scene and using protracker together with modern DAWs. Just compare his song 19h11 with the soundtrack from Razor 1911s voyage demo...
I liked The Outrunners track. Space synth!

Of course, you only have to listen to KOTO or Laserdance to see that, but what appeals to me about this kind of music is that it's based around a distinct melody. You can perform the same tracks with a variety of instruments and it would still be the same track. That's not something you can say about a lot of music today.

But I love that nostalgic synthesizer sound because it reminds me personally of happy days when I was first discovering the demoscene.

On a side note, does anyone else hear the Turrican 2 influences in this track...
