Could this dynamic contrast ratio crap be used to make a HDR display?

was thinking the same. Mine has 3000:1 which was a selling point at the time (a million years ago) and its white requires you to wear shades unless you tone the contrast down. How do they even reach these numbers? I think they just make them up. "What did our competitors do you say? ...well, put 50.000 on ours. 50k is a pretty big and intimidating number isnt it?"

Yes, it's bullshit marketing of course. The actual ratio is probable 1000:1 or something, but they vary the backlight now too. If the backlight varies by 1000:1, they can multiply the numbers together to get a million. It doesn't go any brighter.
