"Windows 8, the start of the end of Windows demoscene?"

It's late, and my brain is getting fuzzy, but something caught my attention earlier. I heard something along the lines that the only way to load the new 'metro' based apps is via MS's app store. And looking at what MS did with their app store for win phone 7, it's basically a copy of what apple did. And what apple did with their store isn't exactly demoscene friendly!

Metro isn't going to be the only option of course (except maybe on tablets?) For now at least. But it does make me wonder where this is going to go.

I still think in a few more years we'll have a choice of closed platforms or smaller 'hobbyist' platforms that are pretty open. Which would be cool, closed platforms are usually nice and convenient and good to work on, hobbyist stuff usually has some nice, fun hardware.

that app shit is a plaque. signed exes and control madness stuff. to much framework bull to do and all that blows up executables. but as long as the verification footprint is small and there're basic interfaces to just init a device and alloc buffers to calc and output the shit there's no problem. hopefully. :/

Tigrou > change your user agent to iPad
That's why I always keep an WindowsXP boot among 7.
Well, most of the time I am working on XP anyways, got my tools there and too lazy to migrate to 7.

I daresay that in a few years, we'll all be releasing demos that run on HTML's canvas element (WebGL).

Great, yet another layer of software to make things even slower.

We've given 8 a quick go in the office here, and nobody seems to like it. The new "start menu" will be fine for light use on a tablet, on a desktop it's rather horrible. In fact the whole OS now feels like a tablet OS... until you hit certain bits, and it drops back to regular windows 7 style. And the tablet bits feel incredibly clunky on a desktop.

Basically, it feels like it's design to work on both desktop + tablet, but won't actually work well on either. :( Hopefully they'll make a *lot* of changes before it's released. Ideally I think they should split the two halves into 2 separate OSes, metro for tablets/windows phone and regular windows for the desktop.

Noticed how with every release of windows you have tons people who disable any form of theming, break the anti-aliasing and try to relive the experience of Windows 95? Nobody likes change -especially us nerds.

And relax, there's always Linux! *ba-dum-tsssch*

I'm all for change (today I swapped my mouse out for one of the multi-touch trackpad thingies, because mouse is starting to feel outdated :)

The new metro stuff is kind of cool, but it's touch-oriented. On a tablet, yes. On a desktop, without a touchscreen, no, it's a step backwards. It's like if apple had put the iPad UI on the mac, it would be a huge step backwards (and that 'launch pad' feature is one thing i see zero benefit in). On a tablet though, it's good.

Same goes for the standard desktop UI. It's fine on a desktop, but it's near unusable on a tablet. The controls just don't work under a big fat finger instead of a mouse pointer.

So, mix the two together, what happens? Nothing good ;)

I'm with psonice on that one, never tried any tablet, but I believe this Metro UI may work. On tablet, not desktop.

I just hope there will be a classic start menu back in the final version, current one is confusing, and pretty much unusable. Not to mention that I still can't figure out how to pin applications which are not on the 'Search -> Apps'' list :)

And I'm still looking for Shutdown button, I could only find it after logging off.

Also, Windows 7 is prettier.

Took me a while to find the shutdown button too (it's somewhere under that bottom-lef-hand-corner menu, maybe under 'devices'? Not sure now).

Also, I couldn't find out how to close a metro app. There's no menu, so no little X in the corner, and no obvious quit option in the app, and no obvious way to quit in the start menu. Task manager works OK of course, but that can't be the only way. Or is it designed so you don't quit apps any more, like iOS?

Haha, found it, thanks! I actually been there before but forgot about it! :D
I wonder if this dev build is going to receive any bigger updates from MS or should I just way for final or at least leaked beta... ;)

Could be :/ Also, it took quite a while to remove lots of junk from that Start screen... how about selecting multiple apps and giving option to remove them? Huh, MS? :)

All you need is an easy way of purchasing fart apps from the store.

Installed on TK-55/2GB/160GB 5400rpm/gf8400GS laptop.
Its fast, 11-12s cold boot.
But alas, I really dont like using the new start SCREEN. Want old menu back!

Installed it on a 6 years old laptop, IE10 launches pretty fast on this shit, only problem is that the graphics driver is a generic driver so the graphics isnt smooth. Dunno if Nvidia or AMD have some beta drivers for win8?

And i really cant adapt to that touchscreen GUI....how the hell do i close the apps?

tomoya: so far, anything truly new and worthwhile in any version of windows gets shelved before it ships. I doubt the legacy interface will be truly gone :)

Anyway the whole touch/no-touch thing aside, how is Windows 8 spelling doom for intros on Windows? Worries about a walled garden in a new OS seem kind of ...off.

Well ctrl-alt-del brings up the menu, where you can select task manager and kill apps from there ;)
