well if you want some jpegs of rock texture, or some fucked up FFT grass, or some house bricks, just let us know. We charge 100 euros per jpeg. We can also offer you samples of a choir or strings or a distorted lead. Let us know!

i have a related question and i yet have to install vs10. now, i was making a has-to-be-tiny project and ran into that infamous cant load mscrt9.dll box @ launch when not embedding the manifest. now it seems the manifest tells the loader where to find that dll - i'm guessing i need to link against an alternate crt lib or go commando like in the old days and implement the necessary stuff myself? pointers appreciated.

and i'm _obviously_ very self-conscious about my rustyness and obvious oversights before i fire questions :)

why do I have to ask all the embarrassing questions while others lap up the answers? :-)

Look, we learnt the hard way not to write demo on linux then port to windows. This time it's windows first, because windows is fucking difficult :-) Thanks for the help from the non-facepalmers!

directsound is half a sound driver. and yes, it would work better if I ruled out XP and used the new api.

new hardware don't support DOS very well anymore. well, atleast my laptop doesnt. it keeps restarting after x-amount of minutes. then if that happens too often, the filesystem gets fucked and needs to insert backup cd and reinstall the bootup-sequence. and dosbox is not emulating all e 100%. example the vsynch-register(s) is not emulated. that is you cannot get rasterbars working.

You're free to add that feature and recompile Dosbox. I did that when I needed 512*384 VLB modes. Or alternatively you score a dated PC and move your DOS-development there.

and MeteoriK, one tip: sit down a think prior to posting -- it's real hard to make any sense of what you're saying. I'll ignore 1 post and reply to the last one: just pick the technology you deem fitting for your 4K. Certainly for that genre, compatibility isn't something to miss a lot of sleep over. Specific requirements are, to some reasonable extent (e.g. not supporting XP), okay.

i'm linking against opengl32.lib gdi32.lib kernel32.lib user32.lib winmm.lib, but no system32.lib, but it doesn't mean that i don't do it wrong. :D

surely you *must* do it wrong to fit it in 4k? :)

superplek|bps: the later one i prefer. i use a compiled binary version of dosbox, using windows. are there any opensource projects available for download? cant be adding anything if not. im not too experienced with VGA. I can research and implement though. but if you have emulated synch-registers, why not try give the dosbox-developers and have them implement it as feature in next dosbox-release? just a though.

dosbox is opensource and with a bit of twiddling you'll get it to compile in visual studio. i guess you can ask about the feature on their forum. perhaps there is some good reason it isnt there already since that stuff is rather duh to begin with.

It seems there are some people here fiddling with Windows 8 installs...

Have anyone tried running a Crinkler-compressed 4k intro (which works on Windows 7, i.e. from Crinkler 1.2 or newer) on Windows 8? It is on my todo-list, but I have been holding back until there is an official beta of Windows 8.

Also, what Gargaj said: If anyone has a reference to information about new requirements that Windows 8 puts on executables, please share.

I would like to take this opportunity to mention Crinkler's compatibility strategy: Whenever a new Windows arrives which is incompatible with existing Crinkler-compressed executables (which so far has happened in two out of two cases), we update Crinkler to work with the new Windows and provide an option to fix old intros. Don't worry, your 4ks are safe. :)
