by the time he sorted out all unknowns, farbrausch bought the demoscene!

Even tho it's pointless what he's doing.

why is it pointless?

What he gonna do with the tools intermediate file specs? Doing a demo in that text format? Even if he adds parameters to the ops this way, there's mosdef no way the tool gonna handle that, rather than bug or crash. There's no way he'll do better than just using WZ creatively the way it's supposed to be used.

BTW. If I got that right the thing is around 7 years old. Big ups to the "Zeitmaschine".

9 years is about right. First release made with Wz1 was fr-minus-03 (Dec 2001), first "proper" Wz1 releases were fr-019 and fr-020 at MS 2002.

Wz3 basic stuff was done early 2003 (Candytron used that, but the UI and half the ops were completely rewritten summer that year), first release with the "real" Wz3 was kkrieger in 2004, then theta that December, and then a lot of demos and intros after that :)

Ach, wie die Zeit immer vergeht. And "D" was more or less the last prod 6.5y ago.

I agree with Gargaj. More power to you Sauron!

The demoscene is a god damn inexplicably obscure hobby if you ask any random person on the street, so why the hell are we busy picking on the guy who chooses to reverse engineer the WZ file format? I mean, is it THAT much more irrelevant than what the rest of us are doing!?

If you know the file format, you can edit the contents. That means you can make your own tool that fills the file up, potentially allowing you to do stuff not possible in WZ itself. Or at the least, you could use it to automate a boring task like setting up some repetitive chains.

Sure. I get it. >>>> repetitive chains?! <<<< Like "Store" chain once and "Load" it again at any place?!

Man. You have to recycle !!!! ;)

And operator recursion isn't coded and doesn't work, cause it lacks control of the breakout conditions. You can even try that "intool". But Chaos already talked about that at a seminar about the development of tools, esp. werkkzeug.

So. You'll have to CODE your own, to do so. ;)

blah... I'm off.

sure, you cant do something that is impossible in wz itself. But you can do things that impossible (read: ridiculously long or difficult) to do "by hand". And kkrunchy could still pack that very well, so it can be useful for 64k

i have not read all of the thread - but you should be able to unlock the wz3te to a full wz3 by flipping a bit in the config file. (not the .k file)

werkkzeug1 was used to create fr-08: .the .product, released just over 10 years ago.

No, fr-08 was made using <b>generator</b>. See http://theproduct.de/tool.html.

Yes, I can quickly create wz1.datafile.editor if I need.

But my new tool is not based on .wz1 format.

@Chaos. You know the trick doesn't work. I flipped ALL the bits now. Version tokens, size indicators, a couple of bools, strings with lenght info, color vectors, and memory counters. but nuthin' is full. The thing crashed a couple of times, but else... sure waste of time. :D

The finest bug is the grid on the operator page when changing bits in the name.

Still funny. ;)

I like how he mentions the copyright at the top of the structure definitions:

/*
* .werkkzeug 3 file format.
* (c) 2010-2011, Sauron.
*
* Comments:
*
* none
*/

Comments fail me as well
so? sounds fair. that's one person's own pet RE project, all the stuff was written by one person all the way he likes it.

so if something wrong, it's his fault aswell, no one should bother chaos with that.
added on the 2011-02-02 11:50:53 by ton ton
he's presumably claiming copyright on that document that himself wrote, not the werkzeug file formart. It could be a bit more clearly worded, but who cares?
