PS3 homebrew (demos) again ...

category: code [glöplog]
Some years back I had a manager that trialled a big cabinet of laptops that could be loaned out to staff, to go with our first wireless network. It went really well, so well that he told me he was thinking about replacing a lot of the networked desktop PCs with laptops. Fine, except that he was talking about bolting them to the desks, leaving them plugged into the mains but with wireless networking. He was actually serious too, thank fuck that didn't happen :D

plek: Well, my Yaroze experencies date back to late '97 / early '98, and in that time it was pretty much just a hacked up gcc with a few libs and some SDK reference guides. It was...unfun :)

is there any other gcc? :)

LLVM is pretty usable even for serious development now, and is waaaay less facepalm worthy than gcc as far as things like compilation time, code quality and readability of error messages are concerned :)

kb: By LLVM you mean clang, right?

Yep. I must admit that I didn't try for myself yet (no reason to leave VC++ at the moment :) but some ppl I know use it for embedded stuff (ARM based) and are quite happy with it.

kb: Clang wasn't able to produce Win32 PEs until very recently (at least without relying on gcc somehow). I've been meaning to test it properly for a while. I actually went as far as building it some months ago, but that was before it was usable for Windows development.

well its more that besides vcc i've only touched vendorspecific compilers, and that happened to be snc now for ps3 :) (which *is* gcc, i know, but still..)
added on the 2010-12-09 20:24:27 by superplek superplek
err, no, ps3 gcc != snc. there's a ported gcc (default compiler for ppu, only compiler for spu) and there's snc (EDG frontend, custom backend, nothing to do with gcc).

yeah i know you can use gcc or snsystems compiler but i was under the impression that snc was a gcc tweak.. (and likewise aware that its not the spu code) -- did some comparisons between both and back in 2009 snc was hardly winning afair.

i remember sony pushing major developers over to snc for a while though, or at least trying. how's that coming along these days, not well i guess if gcc is still ppu default?

what is all this history talk? the ps3 is sitting, waiting... :)

ehrm, engrish -> aware that it's not the spu target compiler (snc that is), minus likewise

flu. need sleep. and the ps3 is history in either an oversized big metal box or something that resembles a compact household grill.

get over it.

I like how magic tries to post something constructive and ends up accused of having a purple ass :)
