because the euro smells of poo.

Because there are enough people in the UK who associate Europe with:

a) bureaucrats arguing about the permissible limits of banana curvature
b) all these Polish immigrants coming over here, stealing our jobs
c) having to bail out Greece's economy
d) by jingo we're not going to let them take away our pound, tally ho, pip pip, *plays God Save The Queen on a vuvuzela*

…that any political party who tries it will be roasted alive.

At least, english people know about metric system... right? :)
Oh joy, more tedious 'analysis', with the emphasis on the anal.

I'll put in my three eurocent's worth. It's very simple. Football in the UK is in a perfectly fine state and fit for purpose.

That is, if you are a shareholder or owner of a big premier league club, Sky TV, a player's agent, or one of those people who make a living off football being run like some kind of weird extended soap opera, where the actual 'playing the game' part lies crushed and defeated at the bottom of the pecking order.

There's just this annoying competition that takes place every four years to remind people how different things could have been, that the 'other' way of doing things might be less hyped and hysterical, more sustainable and somehow better. But only for a short time. The soul searching will be forgotten when it comes to time to renew the season tickets and Sky Sports subscriptions!

Toodle pip!

We measure "things" in [milli/centi]metres, but distances in miles.
It is only legal to sell foods in [kilo]grams, but milk, beer and blood* are measured in pints.
Petrol is sold in litres, but people calculate their cars mileage in miles per gallon.

(*As in blood loss, or giving blood. We don't, as a rule, sell blood to drink. Although you can buy pigs blood in sausage form).

Oh, and we measure speed in miles per hour. It would be bloody confusing to measure distances in miles, but speed in kph after all.

Also, modern spanners and drill bits have mm sizes as standard, but often carry an equivalent inch fraction, and you can still buy imperial spanner sets for dealing with old equipment, for example. Also, socket sets come with metric and imperial sockets.

Well, drill bits often carry an equivalent inch fraction. Spanners are usually just labelled imperial or metric.

England should've played with two or three sweepers. However, that's only somewhat funny with the original term, "libero". Whatever.

Spain - Portugal today should be a good balanced game. Probably the first game with balanced teams on the 16th finals or whatever they're called.

xernobyl: bit optimistic for portugal arent you?

england were terrible at the world cup, but we take solace from not being quite as bad as italy.. who in turn can take solace from not being quite as bad as france. :)

Xeron, thank you for these vital informations! I'll try to remember that if someday I move there :)
I don't understand why English people don't get behind their rugby and cricket players, tennis players, boxers and olympic athletes more, because we actually do really well in those sports.

Anyway, my money has been on Argentina from the start. Gotta love Maradonna!

It's sad to see england play kick'n rush with an italian coach.

Wade: I'd agree with most of that list, but tennis?! Wimbledon is the one sporting tournament where we have to cling to past glories even more so than the world cup... wasn't the last British winner in the 1920s or something? And it's not like Tim Henman had any shortage of squealing female supporters...

smash: I'm not a big football fan, or a fan at all. On FIFA's ranking portugal is ranked 3rd, and Spain is ranked 2nd. Since Portugal ended up on a tie against Brasil, the first ranked team, I would say it will be a good balanced game. It's pure statistics :D

Gasman: Well, I took a bit of a guess at that one as I never follow tennis, but thought I remembered an English guy in the finals last year. Ok, cross that from the list! :)

Wade: that would have been the ball boy ;)

Murray is not doing badly, perhaps he'll get near or in the final this year (he's in the quarter finals already i think), although he's scottish. Close enough for me. At least he's right up there at the top, maybe not up with the very best but very close. Way better than henman ever was.
