computers invented by americans? blasphemy! wasn't it Zuse (yes a GERMAN) who did that? Or do I just know nothing?

Babbage was English...
ENIAC was made by Americans...
there's a lot of development all over.

wasn't Zuse's 'computer' mechanic?
there were other mechanic calculators(would you call that a computer?[you could argue that Zuse's computer was programmable tho]) before..

there was also this english (iirc) chap in the 19th century by the name of Babbage.. but thats besides the point.

too bad i can't remember where i first encountered on of those "without the US we'd all be living in the stone age because we invented the refridgerator, electricity, telephones, the internet, imacs and freedom" troll.. 'twas lots of fun.

We have Zuse's computer in a museum! It is based on binary(!!!) relays from telephony, and has a working clock of approx 2 Hz. It does work like a real Von-Neumann architecture computer. Its memory was not perfectly stable and would make one mistake every few hours, but if you compare it to the lamp computers, it's actually quite usable.

cruzer: that argument is quite pointless. oh and yes, without hitler germany wouldn't have the autobahn.

Gargaj: your prod revealed nothing, and charging myself with 220v as suggested only created a burning odor (and some tingling)

Most of the stuff is not exactly news, and generally well-known already. Still, it is interesting to read about it once again.

I'm excited. So excited in fact, I just can't hide it.

I'm about to lose control, even. And... You know what?

Yeah. You guessed it. I think I like it.
