Breakpoint 2010 - Like there is no tomorrow

category: parties [glöplog]
I remember clearly when The Party series in Denmark (which for years was the biggest party of them all between xmas and new year in the 90's) ended people moaned scene is dead but is wasn't ofcourse. Only an era ended and a new era started. Afterall nothing lasts forever and stays exactly the same forever.

Besides the breakpoint 2010 website states:

"We are highly interested in assisting any skilled team who would be willing to create a follow-up event for 2011, just as the guys from Mekka & Symposium back in the days had supported us once we announced that Breakpoint would be filling the gap the closing party had been leaving. Contact us at Breakpoint if you are interested."

Good chance something happens during easter 2011 in Germany ;)

Even better chance Magic won't be there...

Drinking at/during TG has never been a problem - it's basically just like The Party, back when that was awesome: you had to sneak stuff in, or stay outside to booze. AFAIK: TG has it's own "shadow event", just not as outlandish (or long-lasting) as Boozembly.

But - TG replace BP? It will most likely draw more scandinavians, which is awesome, but I believe some sort of event (or even: events?) in central europe will take BPs timeslot. Will it/they be quite as big? Perhaps not. Will it matter? Most likely, no.

It would be nice to hang out with the current BP orgas when they aren't all running around with their hair on fire. Running a party looks like hard work. It's someone else's turn!

if you want to hang out with us it actually is enough to visit the major german parties and/or parties like main, buenzli or rewired. it didn't need us to stop BP to drink some beer ;)

gloom: Since most sceners these days are either in uni or working, I don't think the scene really NEEDS a party to cover that timeslot. That doesn't mean that no one will keep up our easter-tradition, though. ;)

kusma: Oh, it's not _needed_, but it is indeed a Good Thing(tm) that we as a community have a few key events to gather around, such as BP, ASM, and other local parties (like Solskogen, KG, Evoke etc..)

gloom: I was referring to that BP falls during a holiday. But I guess my point is stupid, as easter is work-holiday as well as school-holiday (unlike some other holidays, at least in Norway).

Otherwise its going back to the good old, old, oooold times to release something outside of a party ;)

alkoTG is a lame name... "The Boozering" sounds so much more like it

Kusma, I remember when times changed where slowly, prods only got released at party's instead when alot of prods where also released in between party's so could be cool if those times came back (if only for a little..)

what part of "fuck off" is so hard to understand?
added on the 2010-02-03 21:47:41 by havoc havoc
I think the "off"-part just gets lost in translation, somehow. God knows he heard it often enough - ought to have sunk in by now.

why are you people bashing that magic guy?

The whole "Hide to drink" thing aint my cup of tea.
I guess TG is for the TRULY creative sceners and not the hobby-alcoholics.
But some sort of "antiTG" or "The Boozering" at an announced spot (atleast for a intro/demo compo stream) would be cool.

Back to topic:
So we're not supposed to contact the hotels directly.
But can anyone remember if you could book from THURSDAY and on last year, or if it was from FRIDAY and on?
If so, nice if it could start on Thursday this year.

Magic, tell us more stories about you going to The Party and the early 90's again since some people may have missed all previous 209548509 ones!
If it doesn't work, you can always ask Chaos/Sanity^Farbrausch to release Debris 2 since it's the last Breakpoint ever.
If that doesn't do it either, just sign off with some random polish word that will leave people in awe.

i actually also remeber the end of THE PARTY parties. most of us refused to go there, since it was over commercialized and too gamer-friendly. the organizers were, as i recall, skilled but very arrogant and more focused on providing a good gaming experience rather than a good demo experience.
This band ("Heavy Metal ohne Gitarren)" is from Bingen from Rhein: (.de)

Van Canto

Just so you know.

What mac say is true. However, I don't think the party organizers 'sold out' as much as local gamers 'bought in' and the organizers could not turn it around as sceners withdrew in disgust. I think they wanted to introduce more computer savvy people to the scene with game magazine adds and what have you, and by this they became the defining example of 'backfire".

macaw: The last time I visited was in 2001, and apart from some very funny episodes (INVOLVING FAMOUS SCENERS, MAGIC!), the party itself was a fucking disaster. Gaming everywhere, overzealus anti-piracy people insisting to see my license for Maya (!), cold all the time because they had to keep opening one of the walls to let air in because the aircondition had failed or something, people next to us kept using a small sandwitch grill to make stuff that smelled like rotten cheese, delayed compos, almost no sceners around... etc. etc. It also started rather badly, when we weren't allowed inside the hall until we had paid TWICE for the tickets (we got tickets for The Gathering the year before to use at TP, but the guy at the door had "never heard of anything like that", and so we had to pay again or leave). Also, the demo we were working on never became what we wanted it to be, mostly to lack of inspiration and CRAP internet connection (the main coder was in Norway, the other coder was drunk and picking a fight with some size-obsessed germans :)

My last TP was 99, I think. After that I refused to go there again.

I also recall the weird air conditioning in the halls, I think this is a returning issue for the party place. Every once in a while they would open up the huge garage doors to let in VERY cold air.

... and as many others, I remeber the year where TP arranged a RAVE party in the sleeping hall.
Ah, mind tricks. My last TP was 2000.
tft: Booking from Thursday will be possible.
