Oldschool effect name question

category: general [glöplog]
I need the name for the effect of the oldschool tunnels and distortions, you know the look up tables for x and y 2d displacement over a texture.

I suppose "2D displacement map" could be a good name for it, but as far as I remember, there is a more propper name. Do you remember it?

Thanks in advance

JSYK, in SVG they call them displace effect/filter.

+1 for "table effect".

first you give a good answer yourself
"2d displacement map", which is about exactly what it is

and then you people say table effect, 'movetable' effect or 'offset-effect' is more descriptive?

go to hell

That apparently was not boring enough to be used in shitload of Atari demos. ;)

we called all similar effects "színesforgó", which roughly means "colorful rotating stuff"

I used "deformation matrix" at the time.

you don't store x and y 2d displacement over a texture, you store the offset in that texture and use addressing modes to pass in the base address of the texture.
that's why i call it an offsetmap, because it store offsets, and because it's a map, like in pixmap and bitmap.

you are confused, that was the "pretty cool mid90s atari effect" :-)

back in the days, we called that effect "analraid" for obvious reasons :-)

offsetmap: a boring old effect, for which you need to be called tobe to use it effectively.
