some music feedback

category: general [glöplog]

cheers fellas! i am working on some new non-scene music stuff and was wondering if anyone would be willing to share some comments/ideas on improvement etc.. anything goes! this is obviously made for those interested in extreme downtempo / ambient kinda sounds. this might be the wrong forum to post this, but i will give it a shot anyhow.. moderators can delete or move it if inapropriate.

i don't like musical feedback, it hurts my ears and ruins my recordings.
uhh, i like !

this thread could easily derail tho ;)

prove? -> here you go !
im just 400bytes thanx to gopher !
completely overkilled by 2 conversions tho ! sound kills itself, i gotta learn in that field !
c0c00n: this is cool! perhap a bit less reverb on some tracks to bring them a bit closer to the forground? too much verb can create a bit of a messy soundscape, and at the same time it can help place the various sounds in relation to each other. anyhow, i derail.. good work! :)

Sounds nice and subtle.

hey mate :) I recognize your typical lowtempo swing rhythm there, it really sounds like xerxes, and that's good :)

I'm missing some high frequencies in the beginning, later they're compensated by the faint voice. Perhaps adding some melodic instrument like guitar or e-piano with lots of high frequencies, playing small notes now and then, would enrich the piece.

The middle part sounds a bit empty, I think the mid-freqs stop too early, let them go on playing some time even after the drums stop and let them begin before the drums start again. Without them or drums, the mid part seems too long and stretched-out.

For the chord sequence: For me they don't tell me anything, and don't provoke an emotive response, i don't know if that's what your intention was, but for example, "christmass layer"'s chords were really touching for me. As the song is too "big" now, I wouldn't change them.

Overall, nice for listening in the background, but it's not a "memorable" song that keeps playing in your head when you're not listening.

xTr1m - thanks for lovely feedback! its hard deliberatly evoke a feeling with whoever is listening. in my experience, the listener himself have no idea why one piece works and another doesnt. with so many things to worry about in terms of sound, mixing, melody, chords, progressions etc etc, this is one thing i can not be bothered to deliberately try to achieve :)

as for the freq's and more melodies and those things - some of the most difficult things in music, specially for those who does ambient - is doing little. to be, some piano playing on top of what is allready there would clutter it up and negate the little energy that is allready there.

anyhow, i think you bring up a point that there actually is room for more stuff.. and this i will definitly look/listen into :)

chromag, drums are from stylus RMX. simple, but does what i want them to do.

thanks everyone for feedback, much appreciated :)

wonderful track as always :)
the only thing i noticed were some clicking bugs towards the end (or maybe it's just my crappy soundcard?)

i like most of your songs. some are really excellent, but this song
is boring and really seems not to deliver "the message". its floating too much
and also is repetive without building up anything. sorry, but not my cup of tea.

(but as i said you are an excellent musician, and some other songs blew my minds already).

zoom, yeah.. that will be fixed in final master ofcourse :)
jazz, thank you for kind words! i totally get what you mean :)

cheers!

Nice track.

Now, nitpicking mode:
I find the beat too boring/repetitive ; I miss some little variations, little surprises.
I like the progression till the break @ 3:30.
But in the next part (when the beat is off), I think something is missing (I don't know what :p).
In the third part, the progression is not really good : the main change is the timbre of the instrument playing the melody, quite cliché...
I agree with the "floating too much and also is repetive without building up anything" for this part... maybe an efficient countermelody could have his place ?
And finally, I don't really like the way the song ends.

But again, great track, and I personnaly find it quite memorable for an ambient track :p.

What, didn't I comment already? I LOVE this one, it has been on my playlist at work for two weeks. It's really nice to listen to when I need to focus ;)

Great track! I like the "bouncing ball" instrument which goes on in the background. No piano pls! I never enjoyed piano in these "grand ambient creation of the universe" tunes. How about some element to balance out the smoothness of the tune somehow? I can't honestly say what this should be. Maybe some voice talking about mumbo jumbo in the background. Like in The Orb's Little fluffy clouds. Anyways, good stuff!

just have some fun with bitjam 88b ;)
has mumblings a lot ;)
whoo.. this one came alive again?! :) thanks everyone for feedback, specially kusma who likes it as it is.. because to be honest, i am not sure more things are needed.. hehe. we'll see.. i will release it on my new website very soon as part of the selected works series. oh and btw, the selected works albums has album art by IQ - i think most of you will recognize it HEHEHE :)

for info: yes, IQ has given me his blessing to use his work.

The mix leans slightly to the right, mostly because of the vocal-like oohh/aahh sound.

Which reverb plugin/box did you use?

trc, yeah.. the mixing part is not done at all - so issues like that should be fixed. i use logic studio and the mostly plugins that comes with it.
