Favourite moments from Solskogen 2009

category: general [glöplog]
You know what, next year I'll arrange a demoshow from my laptop, and orga team can set up their equipement in peace... how about that top men? I ran a small demothing by my tent thursday night and it seemed to be quite popular.

I am one of those that thinks you can run loud volume if you offer free earplugs. Fortunate for me I could borrow Elfan's ear protection and he didn't seem to mind the volume.. but it was fucking loud for that small place. I did go outside when they tested (?) the PA system which made the whole desk vibrate.

Dwarf: stop being such a wanker, we had a damn good time, that's what counts :-)

thec: thursday evening's demo show by the tent was very welcome :) I thought it was quite funny that you IMMEDIATELY upon arriving drew power from the kitchen and started the boozing :)

/me approves of thecs demoshow and handing out of icecream and beers - I'm sure that you made the final kill-shot for my major hangover on friday :D

OK, so after getting over the "post party depression" (TM Gargaj), here's some nuance:

Great stuff:
- working with Gargaj again
- having Thec behind me at the party, showing me some nice demos I hadn't seen before, talking about Blender and 3D modeling and just being a nice, friendly guy in general
- Darklite!
- the general quality of submissions in all compos (OK, the SIDbox saved Wild, but apart from that all compos was enjoyable)
. being pretty happy with both demos I participated in making
- having Xerces next to me during the demo compo, constantly praising both the sound of the PA and the two tracks I made (thanks!)
- getting confirmation that the projector we bought for Kindergarden (and loaned to Solskogen) was very suited for its intended use
- Puryx voluntarily lending us a soundcard for the compo machine (thanks!)
- the danes' mad dancing during several compos
- meeting a lot of people both new and old that I enjoy being around

Not so great:
- being to stressed out with getting everything up and running to actually get to spend time with people.

Thanks to all people showing up and making my first Solskogen since 06 a good party with great people!

a suggestion for next year: test all executable content on the demo machine right after the deadline (and only re-test re-uploads if schedule allows it).

it was quite puzzling to see that Lugoober and gargaj were trying them out while the big screen announced "compo will start soon"

i'm also all in for a better schedule and announcing system. if you compare the party with a certain german easter party - you guys really missed the verbal and visual annoucnment of event.

oh and next year, please supply more sun :-) thursday and friday were awesome thanks to Mr. Sun.

i really enjoyed the party and had a fun time going there (including the trip with fellow danes). cheesy and I had fun in the car from Fredrikshavn listening to Mickey and Buddax being extremely drunk and tired ;-)
ah and another wtf.

on sunday morning - the guys on the left and right of the picture below had a fight on the lawn. before the guy on the right escaped on his bike. definitly not worth watching...

BB Image
A real fight? Or just some sillyness? Because atleast the guy on the left seemed like a really nice harmless dude that would hurt anyone(even though he probably could). I tackled him really bad in the football match but he only laughed and said it was all good even though he was hurting :)

The guy on the right was sutch a riot when he was piss drunk...hehe...I remember overhearing a conversation he had with spookysys on saturday eeeaarly morning when they were both really wasted. :D

thats "that would NOT hurt anyone"

well, not a fight as in beating each other. but the guy on the left tried to pull the guy on the right off his bike - and neither seemed happy at the moment ..

and 2 minutes after that he got hold of another bike and chased after him

yah, that was some pretty surreal shit... :/

I put some ultra-crappy pics here: http://skjoldbroder.dk/z/index.php?album=Scene+Parties%2Fsolskogen+2009 (Dwarf et.al., there are also pics from Kindergarden & Breakpoint)

they were taken with the lousy iPhone camera, so ... yeah :)

- liking thec's photos! more, more =)

Well at least the guy in the right was incredibly drunk and acting like a fucktard on Sunday morning and trying to wake me up from my sleeping bag a couple of times :)

hehe.. i love how the two ppl who got the most wasted of everyone during the weekend are just referred to as the "guy on the left/right).. anyhow, guy on the left was a really nice, easy going fella - so i can imagine guy on the right had done some extremely silly shit in order to get guy on left so worked up. i wonder where guy in the middle was during all this?

lug00ber, i surely hope you and gargaj will be doing every kindergarden and solskogen in the future. you are great at organizing, and the PA sounds like a dream! i suppose if you and gargaj recruit one more person to help out with everything - you will have more time to socialize :)

Oh, that guy (on the right)... I never quite caught his name, who he came with or his connection to the demoscene, but I'm pretty sure he was walking around the party place early sunday morning, shouting and wanting people to eat instant coffee powder or something. Apparently his "magical coffee" (equal parts instant coffee and lukewarm water) was better than speed.

If Guy On The Left or Guy On The Right are reading this, I'm sure the full story would be a thrilling read :)

i'll step up to take blame for the lack of demoshow (which was a direct result of us not managing to set the hardware up in time) - we had a lot of issues with our gear and fell back to last minute solutions many many times. the fact that most people didn't notice most of the fuckups is nothing short of a miracle.

the statement about the lack of announcements i dont really understand. we always had a counter on the bigscreen, and always announced what compo should start when. sure, we didnt have a jingle or stage lights, but i dont think those are necessary either.

...and if i'd have to pick a favorite moment, that'd be lug00ber turning off puryx's sound card before the compo and thus blasting about 200W's of *CLICK* through the audience. :D

Gargaj: and saying something like "atleast there´s nothing wrong with the cables" :)

Also I think the announcement comments was not directed at the compos, but towards other events (welcome, food, showers, etc etc)

The unfortunate case is that most people disregard deadlines completely, and considers "when the compo starts" as the real deadline. So as a compo organizer (at least for all the parties I've been involved in running the compos at) you have to weigh the upside of knowing shit works hours before the compo starts against the risk of possibly losing (good) productions because of being a hardliner.

If one suddenly starts to enforce the deadlines really hard, and only allow updates in case of prods not running on the compo machine (in other words, only if the compo crew explicitly asks for an update), people would probably adjust to the new reality quite fast. But by doing that, you would at the same time risk undermining the compo at the party you are doing that at.

It's not really an easy choice.

i'd also like to hereby apologize to Depth for removing their demo from the compos - sorry guys, we were running so late that it was practically impossible to get your demo running in time :(

lugoober, i'm not saying that only updates should be allowed. I'm saying that you should put a deadline and if entries are uploaded past that they won't be tested on the compomachine prior to the competition.

gargaj: concerning the annoucnments - saturdays annoucnements with microphone etc. was awesome. however, friday and saturday morning till afternoon was missing.
Next year, run an aux from the mixer with an active speaker outside for the announcements?

Also, the high quality competition was way too loud. There is a difference between loud and too fucking loud, and when it hurts you ux from the mixer with an active speaker outside for the announcements?
