POUET THUMBING SUGGESTION

category: general [glöplog]
You can clearly see that productions that would barely get an "ok" if they where released at a party you wherent visiting often get a "rulez" because you met the authors or somehow believed it was better due to crowd-hype (see http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=10545,http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=9438 and most recently http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=52938).

With pouet having strong influence on the oh-so-inbred-scene.org-awards and newcomers to the scene we in the group of demoscene moralization and information from people in the know has a suggestion:

Disable thumbs up/down for 1 month after having been released. This would make a new add for an old production being directly thumbable, but a newly released prod would have to wait to get a somewhat more unbiased rating. This would also make productions released at smaller parties gain a somewhat more serious and if-well voted-respectable ratio. Today we all know that a small party release will receive thumbs up from all visitors and "go away" to "thumbs up because of.. " (it has been very few releases this month).

Yours,
President of demoscene understanding group.

I think pouet should have a jury, some unbiased group of people with elite skills, and then every new prod would have a serious evaluation.

NOT!!

just thumb up every prod whose number divides by 7 and you're ok

if people manage to get a crowd hype they must have done something right with their prod....

wise man once said:

Quote:

Browsing around on e.g. Pouet and other scene forums on the net today, the impression is a lot of dishonest positivism. In fact, those who make qualified critical comments in net forums too readily are disciplined for being negative by the majority.

Most comments posted are utterly superficial or trivial; hence there are no insights to be gained by reading them only senseless flatter. Judgements are usually - only - based on a completely private and subjective character, and hence, fail to become interesting.

The difference between now and then was that such comments used to retain its private character, a silent awe in a dark basement apartment, whilst now are published on the net in public.

Of course there is nothing democratic about this as long as people are rebutted when voting/commenting what they really think. This is perhaps a facet of today's scene thatstarted back in my days - "friendship" as intoleration.

Since when have Pouet thumbs been supposed to be taken seriously or to accurately reflect how "good" a production is in objective terms?

To me, the system is a joke. It has all the problems of party-based voting raised to the second power. You can't fix it by improving your voting procedures, so don't even try.

Stefan, if you dislike certain productions and their potential "hype"...sit on you lousy arse and come up with something you think is better...but I almost forgot that you're just a petty pouet troll.

hyde, i do now know where you got that quote from, but the fact that it is drained with difficult language but clearly shows that the author does not even know what "positivism" means makes me doubt the source.

i know this is off topic, but srsly, if you don't know what difficult words mean, don't use them. it makes you look like a moron.

Why would the thumbs or even scene.org awards matter at all anyway?

This idea was very stupid. I actually liked the prods you mentioned and I think they deserve the hype. If your taste on demos is different it doesn't mean that the pouet system is wrong.

News just in: nobody cares about thumbs! We got a whopping 23 for our latest release. wow. It's the party that counts. Right. time to add some more thumbs to the popular demo.

i'd rather see this implemented on imdb. pouet is "broken" beyond repair, let's keep it that way:)

That reminds me. I need to thumb down more fairlight prods with false bug reports. Smash loves that :-)

i think taking care of these guys would help things a lot more
Skrebbel: ok, I see how you could be provoked by that quote into saying the things you do. I should have added a few words as to why I find it relevant here, and also why I think you should look beyond the tone of the language in the quote.

First off, the quote is due to my crew-mate Interphace, and was part of an answer to a question in an interview we did a few years back. The question was not directly related to the topic of this thread, but the passage in the quote is, in my opinion.

The way I like to read it, he simply states that non-anonymous voting in a small community like ours can never represent what it is supposed to represent in a truthful way. Well, we all knew that, but I think it is something that one should remind oneself about from time to time. I also very much like the way he says that true appreciation for a prod. is something that is more a private matter and perhaps something that shouldn't be summed up and ranked to the extent we're doing it right now -- it is when you close your eyes to sleep you know the exact line where your code might crash, and it is also the time when you know what demos you truly like and which ones you don't.

What I like to say is that thumbs, top-10 rankings etc. etc. are nothing more than pure attention. Personally, I love attention. I refresh pouet more than I would like to admit, those rare times I release a production. I find it rewarding and motivating too! But the point is to remember that all that is just representing attention, and only indirectly the real value of the production.

Hence, the point of my comment was really to remind the OP about what real value is. If you agree with what I wrote, there is no need to worry too much about such things as "injustice" regarding any of these ranking systems.

Finally, I can assure you that Interphace knows very well more than enough about what he is talking about in that quote. I agree that the tone of voice could be taken as a bit negative or superior, but that makes neither wrong nor a "moron" :)
